Jermain Defoe (no longer a rumour)

I think Defoe would bring more to the table in terms of giving the fans a boost etc, but Maja would also score goals.

So, to sum up, I dinnar
I'd be more confident starting Maja as a lone striker - and him having an impact - than Defoe at this stage of his career. We also absolutely know that he'd be able to handle being a starter. Defoe's advancing years make that a bit more difficult to say with confidence - albeit Defoe was a better striker than Maja ever will be.

Especially when it say's "[Johnson] he is believed to harbour reservations......", with absolutely nothing to back that up. No quotes, no sources, nothing.

It's a complete non-entity of an article, based on nothing, aimed at attracting Friday afternoon hits for the paper's website.
Haway though man, if its an 'exclusive' it wouldn't be naming sources. I'm not saying the article is definitely correct. But it always leaks out about a manager being sacked etc with no 'sources'.

There was articles last week saying Newcastle would trigger a £25m release clause for wood. Did them articles have quotes?

Absolutely head in the sand if you don't think journalists are briefed.

And stirring up trouble when they know already people are clamming for this to be something they go spare over.

Incredibly small time but what do you expect from the Echo?

only about 18 games left right? lets say it takes 3-4 of those before he's fit. thats 14 games left. then he can't play every game, thats maybe 9-10.

thats a lot of disruption for 10 games - when we could bring in another striker ready to go immediately and also stay on for next year and have re-sale value etc.

I don't like LJ but can't really blame him for the logic.

Who's the forward who's already playing games and presumably scoring?

It's more likely to be a loan of a young lad who's hardly kicked a competitive football or played infant of 30k, or has yet to have any big game mentality.

We're going to have so e squeaky bum moments over the rest of this season, possibly due to being in the playoffs, I'd rather have a Defoe in those times of need than a young lad bricking it for the very first time.

Johnson should be clapping his hands that the boad would sanction such a move in League One....every other manager in this league and possibly some above would take their f#cking hand off if he was offered to them.

Well, that's my opinion anyway.

I’d have Defoe back if he’d be happy to play the impact player role from the bench of course I would, but can understand why there would be reservations.

Before people go on about Defoe’s quality, look at how signing Ronaldo based on sentimentality has worked out for Man Utd, and he’s far better than Defoe.

If the right role can be agreed we should be bringing JD in. If signing him is going to have to mean reshaping the entire team around a 39 year old who hasn’t played all season, it’s perfectly understandable why there would be question marks.

Only adds pressure to Johnson for tomorrow and rest of the season. If it’s true he wants to come it’s a no brainier surely

Christ, I hope tomorrow isn’t difficult for his sake because this hasn’t helped him at all. I respect the bloke sticking to his beliefs for the squad but the emotion involved here there’ll be plenty ready to turn tomorrow.

Be loads of Defoe chants anyway. If we go 1 or 2 down i can see it being like Bolton at home when the ground went nuts wanting Phillips in. Hope I’m wrong but if we hit another streak there’ll be more turn on him because of this unfortunately. I like him too, I think he’s doing well but this hasn’t helped him.
Johnson should have turned around and said 'yes I want him, but let's see what happens'. It was a simple question ffs.

Instead he goes on a 5 minute speech thinking he's more intelligent that he is and has made a cock up and put himself under unnecessary pressure. Its such a bizarre answer to give.

Ok me and rubberface don't always see eye to eye on things.
But my version came from a employee of Oxford Utd.
Defoe only held a brief conversation by zoom on Wed morning.
I understand it went no further.
If we miss this opportunity we will honestly regret it, not as much as LJ but it means AOB is gonna be kept here, cos he works hard in training.
He is shite at football, but never mind.

Spot-on. Defoe gets Wyke's chance in the play-off semi final and we go to Wembley. Big players step-up to big moments
