Jermain Defoe (no longer a rumour)

This “new club philosophy” is bullshit spouted by KLD lovers.

We’ve been signing crocked midfielders and young defenders on loan for years man.

Show me what is “new”

I got slated for saying Evans and Pritchard were crocks

Sending our young prospects on loan instead of them largely rotting in the 23s, while actual playing our own Academy products when ready, signing talented young players - Cirkin permanently, Hoffmann and Dajuku deals agreed, two years of Doyle.

Evans and Pritchard have picked up injuries but is that a recruitment or training issue? For the last few years we’ve had a higher than average amount of strains, pulls and the like.

If you can’t see a shift in attitude then you have serious blinkers on.

I agree that promotion is a must and whilst it's great having a young squad it means fuck all if we're still in League1. What our recruitment team are trying to do is to sign players that they believe are good enough for promotion now and are at an age that they believe can then kick on and improve in a higher division so we aren't constantly signing 11 players a summer or that we can sell for a big profit.

I'm glad we have gone down this route though as I think it is the best way to succeed long term.
Wigan remind me of our Championship winning side under McCarthy. Not necessarily the team that will hammer teams but keep on grinding out results as they're very experienced for this level but once they get promoted aren't as well equipped as the other teams they have finished ahead. Wigan have some good young players that will make the step up but also have a canny few that probably won't make it and are at an age they won't see much financial gain from if they sell.
Spot on, but in the end the bottom line is promotion and if we keep coming up short no matter how we play, it’s not going to be acceptable

he cant get off the fence oin somehting where sensitive commercial negotiations are happening it would help safcs opponents

crowd were tyurning on him at the drop of a hat since he got here..a matchday thresd on here is evenidence of that..,if its 0-0 after 20 minuets it starts
Its not the crowd turning on him. Its complete frustration and a bit of embarassment that we are the man city of league 1 and have been for 4 years yet still find ourselves playing oxford ubited / cambridge / accrington. Our club should only have been down here for 1 season with resources it had but bodgit and scarper took over and absolute fucked the job up. All frustrstion that cones out on matchday threads and anything aimed at the current manager is ultimately cos of said reason. Also, perspective - if it were newcaslte in our position there'd be fake funerals and mass demonstrations held the lot. The previous regime should be greatful they still have all their limbs in tact

I think a lot of the LJ vitriol is down to his smug attitude and office speak. As for JD it’s no big deal he doesn’t sign provided someone else is lined up, we do need more firepower. Some have gone way OTT about this one, if he loved us so much he would have signed for 6 months.

I’m a season ticket holder at every home game, and I’ve never seen the crowd turn on Lee Johnson after 20 minutes at any game, in fact I’ve never seen the crowd turn on Lee Johnson at all.
Oh sorry, you mean the “match day crowd” on the SMB.

You're spot on about Johnson.
I'm not anti Lee Johnson but I can't stand listening to him.

He's got the talk but he needs the walk otherwise he leaves himself open to ridicule.

Problem is, a lot of these lads will be off if we don't go up. Fair do's, we'll probably get decent fees for most, but we'd be having to mould a new side again for our fifth outing in this league and things will get tougher.

I think we can already tell that we're not awash with money, can we really fund things like the academy at 5/6 million a year whilst continuing in this league?.....will the talented young lads want to stay around when clubs in a higher division come calling?

We really need to have the best window possible and give ourselves the best chance of promotion, be that automatically or thru the play offs. If there's quality to be had then we really need to be in for it or all the good work that's been done this season could get wiped and we're back to square one.

I think you've summed it up well there mate

I think we need a few more first XI signings to go up personally

We just lose too many games and it will be a issue if we dont go up this year more than any as we have assets now

Not really Defoe related but the notion of building anything squad wise long term is a joke. It feels like we will fall into a cycle of ‘reset’ every season. Good young prospects ( like Neil / Embleton ) will get scouted and successful loan players will return to their parent clubs. Then it’s back to recruiting again in the hope that the next season is the one.

Back on topic, if the club have the opportunity to get Defoe back and decide against it then so be it. Personally I think it would be a great PR exercise and give the fans a lift when right now it feels like we are on another downer.

All it takes is an injury to Stewart in training and our season is pretty much over. Here you have a striker of the calibre of Defoe on a free transfer who you know is going to guarantee you goals in this division, it should be an absolute no-brainer decision for the club. Will be sickening to watch him banging in goals for another club in our league.

We have no idea if Defoe can play that much.

Very little idea what his fitness is like at present.

No idea what his demands are.

No idea where he or his family want to live.

And so on and so on. I wanted him here but the reactions are over the top in my opinion

We have so little contingency.... I get why some don't want to sign defoe. But I don't get the lack of urgency to bring in support in this area

Welcome to league 1 football. It's very rare that teams get to keep their good players long term down here. Look at MK Don's. Lost Fraser and Jerome in the summer and Watters and O'Reily this window.
