He hasn't turned his back, he just hasn't turned to the right to pay tribute to the national anthem, the national anthem of a country he believes oppressed and murdered his countrymen. Why shouldn't he be allowed to do that if he wants to?

I daresay there will have been a few people who did not show respect to Thatcher or her funeral on the day she died. In fact, here's a link to a Telegraph article: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/pol...al-protesters-turn-their-backs-on-coffin.html

"Many waved placards with home-made slogans or posters from the Left-wing Socialist Worker Party reading, "Now bury Thatcherism".

Earlier there were boos, whistles and chants of "waste of money" as military marching bands passed along the route ahead of the coffin.

One of the back-turning protest's organisers, Hilary Jones, 50, accused the Government of using tax payers' money to turn Lady Thatcher's funeral into a "party political broadcast".

Do you think that the miners and ex-miners of the North East would have shown her respect? After all, I'm sure the miners believe that Thatcher oppressed them and ruined their lives. Does that make them arseholes?
You cant speak for other people.

He had the chance to move to the MOD during the summer.

It's funny that this happened last night. The same night Carl Frampton was fighting, a man who has managed to get the support of the whole island behind him. Just his ptomoter Barry McGuigan, did the same during the height of the troubles.

Just goes to show that sport can be used united us or divide us.

class typo that like

why turn ya back tho? Not everybody agrees bout other countries policies or history but do you see any other footballer turn their backs? He's goin on like a spoilt kid. I got relatives who have suffered frm the irish but do I resent or act like he does? No. He needs to grow up and realise it's not all about him. Absolute moron he is.

Not really.

Why bother then.....

My point was clearly about not wanting posters on here to tar every Irish person with the one brush because of one persons actions. As a result of McCleans actions, there were many posters on here who clearly used their dislike of Ireland in a highly disrespectful manner by spouting pure bigotted remarks.

You cant speak for other people.

Oh so what can I say then?

Are you disputing the fact there's a clear double standard there and you're calling someone an arsehole for doing something you can't hope to understand because you've never lived through what his family and countrymen did?

Wonder how upset he gets when he receives the letter from Hmrc on how his taxes have been spent.

He can go and play somewhere else if he feels that strongly though. A point you have brushed over and ignored from a previous poster

I am English and I too would turn my back on that anthem. I dont believe in God and I despise the Royal family, no issue at all with what Mclean did as he has far more reason to protest given our murderous history and treatment of his country.

To all the ira supporters on here ; you must be gutted that the thick gutless cowardly bastards failed in Lurgan yesterday . Such a pity the bomb didn't go off in their hands .

Because he's an arsehole .

What IRA supporters?

Why should he? He isnt saying he hates the country or playing football here, he is making a point that he is against the monarchy and establishment that resulted in the deaths and murder of his countryman. Not too difficult to understand I wouldnt have thought.

If you'd read the thread there Sheps, I've already addressed that point.

All those republications and pacifists should leave the country as well then. How dare they live and work here?!

I'm showing a comparable situation.

People are calling James McClean an arsehole for not paying respect to a national anthem.
He doesn't do this because he believes the English murdered and oppressed his countrymen.

The mining/ex-mining communities are celebrated on here and in other places. However, they demonstrably did not show respect to Thatcher during her funeral, because they believe that she oppressed them and ruined their lives.

Why is James McClean an arsehole for doing this, but the miners celebrated and applauded?

Is it because people have double standards?

I'm not saying either of these parties are right or wrong in their beliefs of the English/Margaret Thatcher, I'm just saying there's a bit of a double standard there.
If McClean truly believed the English murdered and oppressed his countrymen. He can't have many principles considering he moved to England to earn a living.
He had the chance to play in America but chose to stay in a country he thinks committed crimes against his ancestors.
Makes perfect sense

Who can blame him for trying to play at the highest level?

He wants what most people want, to do well out of life, achieve something and provide for his family. He can do that by playing at the top level of professional football (e.g. England) but not in Ireland or the MLS.

He's British by birth and so has every right to live and work in England. You can live and work here and not necessarily share the same beliefs and values as the rest of society/the country.

Exactly, I should be deported as despise the Royals and establishment. Not sure where I should be deported to given this is the country of my birth. Im kind of confused with the idea that because you are born somewhere you should somehow have some unwavering loyalty to an unelected bunch of parasites that purely by accident of birth are heads of state.......Tell me, if I had been born in Iraq should I have shown loyalty to Saddam Hussein? What about Germany, as I good German should I not have supported Hitler? What about Kim Jong Un? The irony is that in say North Korea people are expected to or are even forced to show respect etc for their leader, that appears to be what some are advocating here with James Mclean?

Plenty of English people do.
