James McClean should be respected for standing up for what he believes. Most of the bigots commenting have no idea of the issue.
I hope he snaps his ACL.

He should stand up for what he believes somewhere else...his bigotry has no place hereJames McClean should be respected for standing up for what he believes. Most of the bigots commenting have no idea of the issue.
It's not the same though. You can't equate the actions of a group with those of an individual. It's all about moving away from the past imo,if sinn fein can lay wreaths with unionists and stand for gstq and the queen can stand at the garden of rememberence in dublin then why can't footballers do the same
We should never forget what happened in Ireland on all sides but if you want to move forward and remove this cycle of hatred you have to respect each other including flags, anthems and culture

Do you have a problem per se with irish republicanism in that is should or can't be apologised for ?'A Republican apologist calling people bigots. Quality.
If you want move forward you have too,it's all about respect of each other and if we can start with flags and anthems then it's a good way of moving to peaceful conclusionIt's not the same though. You can't equate the actions of a group with those of an individual.
I agree with the sentiment, but it's too simplistic. If you want move forward you have too,it's all about respect of each other and if we can start with flags and anthems then it's a good way of moving to peaceful conclusion
I agree with the sentiment, but it's too simplistic.
I'd imagine that he knew when signed for Sunderland, Wigan and WBA that he was signing for and representing British clubs.Knew what? I don't think he knew he was going to be required to stand and pay respect to a flag and anthem that represents oppression and imperialism in homeland before he signed. It seemed to catch him off guard to be honest, very rarely are national anthems played before club games.

As @st joes lad has said, if bitter enemies can put their differences aside they why can McClean? Carrying all that hate around is only harming himself. He's in last chance salon and the fans aren't happy about his attitude when he signed. He's just after proving them right and made his job a lot more harder.
No it's not,I am not just talking about James mc clean but the north of ireland in general, respect should be given to unionist and nationalists flags, anthems and culture of the 2 communtiesI agree with the sentiment, but it's too simplistic.
To be fair to the lad, put yourself in his shoes.
The one country that he believes oppressed his people also happens to be the one country he can use his skills at a high level and make a living out of it
If the only place you could use your skills to make a living was a country you hated what would you do?
Bear in mind he has to earn enough in ~15 years to last him and his family a lifetime
believe it or not football is a popular sport in many countries in the world, some if not all have professional leagues.
You don't see many English or Irish players abroad. Some of course but not a great deal relatively. England also happens to have arguably the best league in the world.
If he wants to play at the top level and earn enough to provide for his family for the rest of his and their lives (which is what most people go to work for) then I can see why he's here
There's a difference between actively disrespecting the country you're in and not agreeing with their traditions
I bet there are plenty of pacifist republicans but nobody gives them shit for not wearing a poppy or singing the anthem
It should be, I'm not disagreeing with that. But it's too simplistic. No it's not,I am not just talking about James mc clean but the north of ireland in general, respect should be given to unionist and nationalists flags, anthems and culture of the 2 communties
