Jack Rodwell, Scapegoat or really that bad?

SG is good at handing out clean slates, gives a one to Galloway before every game!
The die was cast for me in the first minute against Sheff Utd. Rodwell and Galloway made a hash over a basic one-two and Galloway "retrieved" the situation by hitting the ball off an opponent to get the throw. I would have been embarrassed if I was on the pitch. They proceeded to touch hands as if to say well done and carried on in their own worlds.

The lack of basic team understanding and responsibility at the moment is a problem, and this must stem from the training right through to the players on the pitch.

Rodwell's league appearances for SAFC :-
2014/15 - He appeared in 23 of the 38 league games, 6 as a sub. He completed 90 minutes on 10 occasions and was subbed off in 7 games. He completed 1486 minutes of league football out of a possible (38 x 90 =) 3420 minutes, which is 43.5% of the possible total

2015/16 - He appeared in 22 of the 38 league games, 12 as a sub. He completed 90 minutes on 7 occasions and was subbed off in 3 games. He completed 1083 minutes of league football out of a possible (38 x 90 =) 3420 minutes, which is 31.7% of the possible total

2016/17 - He appeared in 20 of the 38 league games, 2 as a sub. He completed 90 minutes on 13 occasions and was subbed off in 5 games. He completed 1423 minutes of league football out of a possible (38 x 90 =) 3420 minutes, which is 41.6% of the possible total

2017/18 (to date) - He has appeared in 1 of the 6 league games and completed the 90 minutes. Therefore he has completed 90 minutes of league football out of a possible (6 x 90 =) 540 minutes, which is 16.7% of the possible total.

Overall he has played 4082 minutes out of a possible 10350 minutes of league football. This is 39.4% of the total.

Of course the quantative total of Rodwell's contribution hardly tells the true story. More important would be a qualitative analysis of his contribution, which is more difficult to measure and is reliant on the less reliable basis of collective opinion. It is generally agreed that on those occasions when Rodwell has been persuaded to enter the field of play, he has been generally poor and has often let the side down.

In the face of this, it is not possible for SAFC supporters to take quite the relaxed and sanguine 'clean slate' approach that the more recently arrived Grayson is choosing to adopt. Rodwell now has significant 'baggage' with the fans and it is unlikely that he will ever be able to shed this. I'm sure that any upset that he experienced from being booed on Saturday will be assuaged by a glance at his bank balance.

Seen the lad Vs spurs under 23s last month, he got bullied, no pace, couldn't tackle, no movement, couldn't pass, had zero aerial threat or presence and we played 100% better when he was replaced and this is again against under 23s. But suppose the clean slate is ok

Clean slate my arse, he'll play a game or two then get injured again and be on the sick for another couple of months, picking up a nice fat pay packet until his next clean slate, the gutless wankers got an easier job than the Queen.

We can live in hope. It's better than him being on the pitch. I would rather he did feign injury.

Exactly. He was crap Vs Scunthorpe in a reserve match versus to lower league, yet somehow gets in the first 11. The regulars of the u-23s must be furious. Would rather play Embleton, Robson, Gooch, Gibson there

I actually can't remember what he was good at before we paid £10 mil for him. Was he a box to box midfielder a defensive midfielder or what? Could he score goals etc, whatever the reason we paid that fee for him he certainly does not have now. When he starts we will lose majority of the time as proven

Was up for the GNR so took two of my friends to see us for the first time (that went well ).

One of them observed, towards the end: 'Number 8 has been a bit rubbish, he hasn't done anything'.

Since arriving it's been totally obvious that he's carrying injuries that he will never recover from, his running stride is extremely short and that's because his hamstrings are shot to bits so he can't open his legs up properly, he can't accelerate properly and he can't jump properly, he'd retire if he was playing 20 years ago because he can't play to anywhere the standard necessary to be professional footballer.

Regardless of this he looks like he hates playing, never does anything with any kind of conviction, weak and slow with no apparent ability to read the game.

He put himself about a bit on Saturday. Flew into a few challenges. Needs to offer more on the ball and make himself available more.

Obviously has the crowd on his back now like so gonna take a monumental effort to turn things round.

"He did alright, but there were a lot of players who did alright."

Jesus wept.
I read that as "he only did alright, he wasn't great" instead of alright being a positive thing. Pure guesswork obviously as he hasn't actually explained what he means but if he played well then you'd say that, instead he has used a very vague phrase that normal means 'mediocre'

This. There was one occasion where we were a goal down, breaking forward in possession, and Rodwell ran so close to a Sheffield United midfielder (to avoid being given the ball) that the United player was actually physically pushing Rodwell away from him. The bloke is absolutely terrified of receiving the ball.
