Jack Colback

Yet again the lad has been totally anonymous, the games just pass him by especially away.

People calling for him to get an England place are seriously deluded, near and tidy decent player, that is all.

Spot on. If Bruce had signed him the apologists would slaughter him.

A ginger Paul Thirwell. ;)

It was another 'nothing' performance from Colback - few tackles and very little in terms of creating attacking play. You can talk about potential and attitude all you want but at the moment our central midfield is simply not good enough for the premiership. Yes, our wingers aren't firing at the moment but you need a strong central midfield to build on and that's what we lack. Larsson was marginally better this week but I think I've seen enough to confirm that he's not good enough for CM. If Bardsley is fit then move Gardener into midfield as he's had a decent start to the season and deserves a start in his natural position.

Neither Jack or Seb are premier league standard cm's.

Cattermole and another would be first choice. I suspect had we signed Jenas he would have been first choice.

Never thought I would say this but we are desperate for Gard in the middle. We are a desperate team to watch at the minute.

Ain't a popular idea on here but imo Colbacks best performances for us have all come at left back....wouldn't go dropping Rose atm either so its a tough one. Colback has potential but he needs to push on from where he is. Its a big season for him...he said himself at the start of the season that he needed to add goals to his game and that he set himself a target of 10. Have seen zero attacking development in his game this season though but it's still early days..we've played 6 games....4 off them away and we've already played Arsenal, Liverpool and Man City. A bit of patience before we can really tell how the team are playing....

this, I have seen no improvment this season thus far.

The one thing that I noticed in the early MON days was that when we attacked it was in numbers, that's all gone now. Whether it's by accident or design none of our attacking players look good (Fletcher) because we are not getting forward in enough numbers to trouble the opposition. Hence they have defenders to spare which enables them mark out any player who happens to be around.

As for Colback, I personally don't rate him but add McLean, Johnson, Sessegnon, Larson, all attacking players, all struggling - too many not good enough? Or have they forgotten how it was done in those three months until Everton showed the rest how to beat us.

The best central midfielder at the club, but also the latest boo boy it seems...

That's as maybe but he has simply offered nothing this season. It's not an issue of 'boo boy' but I can't see how you could argue he's played well this season - he's created virtually nothing and tackles very infrequently. I'm not sure what else a top midfielder does.

To those who criticise Jack for lack of creativity. When you're playing with two out and and wingers, and two strikers (2 or 1+1). You've put your creative players, elsewhere and you're relying on CM to be solid. If we're 'not creative' then it's JMcC, AJ and Sess who have some answering to do.

No, it wasn't Jack's best game. But most of the time the lad was marking Silva - imo one of the trickiest players in the league when in form like today. (Has our recent success against City blinded us to how good they can be?) Colback came off 2nd best.

So a hiding was on the cards.

Got away with it a bit, and do we miss Cattermole!?

The most obvious and most true point on this thread.

They need the ball in the final third and preferably in space before they can be creative. That's Colback's job.

But it'll never be Colbacks skill. Give him an SAFC shirt five yards sideways to him and he's a world beater; give him anything else and he's shit.
