I don't get how you think Vaughan was doing Cattermole's role. They're nowt like each other and do completely different things. If anything, they might form a tidy partnership for this very reason.

What do you think that Cattermole can do which Vaughan can't ?

Cattermole presses, intercepts, and provides drive. Vaughan is excellent in possession and obviously has an excellent shot on him, but they're totally different types of player.

Neither of them play in a midfield 4 plus they are great players.

I suppose it depends on what you want from him? on here he is slated for not being attacking enough however more often than enough plays the defensive midfield role. People then praise Vaughan yet he rarely get's in the box himself. He had two chances today (from memory) one from outside the box which went wide the second a great strike. Colback had a similar chance and it went for a corner (probably going well wide as well mind).

The problem with Cattermole is that he presses all over the pitch and can often be quickly taken out of the game leaving the other midfielder isolated. He also slows the game down as he isnt as comfortable on the ball as say Colback or Vaughan (IMHO). I agree he does provide drive and plays high tempo game but would work better in a midfield 3 as I dont think his game is best suited to a centre mid 2.

Vaughan does all of the above as well

I often think that his relentless pressing is a bad thing, it breaks the midfield line and leaves gaps in behind him. This is why you always see him chasing and eventually tripping the players that have ran into that gap resulting in the inevitable yellow card.

I'm not sure where you're coming from tbh re drive, it's not a word I would use to describe Cattermole. I would possibly say Meyler would drive us forward but Cattermole doesn't or is that not what you meant ?

Does he intercept ? Can't really say I remember this happening on a regular basis.

My argument is that Vaughan can tackle better, keep the midfield shape better, shoot better and keep the ball better, he's just altogether better imo, why pick Cattermole ?

Agree with this, in fact I've just typed the same thing. What is this drive though ? What does he drive ?

He really can't.

Game changed with the man coming on rather than the man going off

Colback generally did OK

He had a very poor first half, and gave the ball a way in dangerous positions at least twice playing the Sessegnon way, ie. wanting to beat a man before a delivery. Needs a good spanking and telling to buck his ideas up imo. Did get better as the game went on though, but ran out of zip.

Thoughts on him today?

Was it coincidence that when he went off we looked a far better side and went on to win the game? Thought he started the game woefully but got better and was tenacious and made some important tackles. Overall though, not good enough imo.

cos we brought on Mclean and ji

Thought he was very good. Generally very accurate with his passes, won all his tackles, and kept taking responsibility on the ball.

I agree. Unfortunately the dimwits have decided he's this season's 'must whine about'. Pathetic really, but it's the same people repeating the same pre conceived nonsense, regardless of fact.

Vaughan also lost the ball on a couple of occasions in the first half. He like Colback is 'crab' like playing the ball left and right as this is where the options were.

In terms of 'drive' I suppose I mean he drives the team to pressurise the ball high up the pitch. I wouldn't say he particularly drives us with his ability on the ball but to be fair to him he did create two chances last week (Sess and Bendtner I think).
