Much more than cattermole.

At the end of the day Vaughan is playing the Cattermole role and better at it.

Our faults are down the win with the lack of movement. Bardsley is a waste of space down the left, O'shea is a centre back and RICO would be better used at left back until a proper left back is brought in.

Eh?

Drop him. Done nothing for weeks, all he seems to do is pick it up in midfield and pass it sideways to bardsley all the time.

Hes neat and tidy but doesn't do enough. Maybe a rest would do him good

The thing that I noticed is that Vaughan and Colback are two midfielders that largely operate in the same area of the pitch.

The difference being that Vaughan likes to pick the ball up deep and find people to open up the opposition from there, whereas Colback is a midfielder that operates in front of the back 4 and will rarely find himself in or around the opposition penalty box.

This means that we're operating with one player less in the opposition's box and therefore not causing them the trouble we could be. I'd like to think this was recognised by MON rather than being a stroke of luck when Colback was substituted!

But you're wrong about almost everything so i'm pleased you say that.

I'd rather have him in than Cattermole and Gardner.

Sorry if my opinion doesnt match yours, should we alll just agree and close the forum?

edit - i stated facts - Vaughan produced a moment of quality - fact. We won the game after he was rightfully taken off - fact. Do you honestly believe he will ever score a goal like that like

Did well in that he kept the ball and acted as a ball playing midfielder. But given Blackburn had two men outside the box that sort of player wasn't really required.

Should have played 10 strikers, given Blackburn had no designs on doing anything other than sitting in front of their keeper.

Thing is though we have options in midfield at least. There will be other games in which Colback contributes more certainly. It's good to have the option of choosing from a few other playes though for other games.

Colback offers nothing as well.

I'd have a fully fit Meyler ahead of Cattermole but he probably isn't ready for a start yet.

Haven't seen Cattermole and Vaughan play together (at least I dont think they have yet) so difficult to comment but I just find Cattermole leave's too many gaps in midfield leaving to much for the other centre midfielder to do. The two today defend well together as a midfield two with one pressurising whilst the other covered and nicked the ball. The two seem to have a good understanding. Also Vaughan and Colback are very similar and if the Colback and Cattermole partnership is to go by then that has never really worked.

Vaughan can do everything Colback does (apart from the tackling perhaps) but his range of passing is far, far better. He was spraying the ball about all over the place and dictated the game in midfield. Colback was just sort of there.

The difference is that Vaughan has experience which Colback needs to earn.

Give Colback more than one game under O'Neill and he'll become vital to us.

I don't get how you think Vaughan was doing Cattermole's role. They're nowt like each other and do completely different things. If anything, they might form a tidy partnership for this very reason.

He kept messing things up with bardo, i agree with the op, not good enough.

There is no need to play Cattermole if Vaughan is playing. Vaughan can do everything that Cattermole can, but better. As already stated Colback doesn't really add much, so for me we should either give Gardner another chance (looked decent in the stiffs midweek) or play Meyler.

Probably more as a consequence of experience than anything else. Think Colback has the ability to do the same but is just into his second season with us and over time will improve. When he was spraying the ball a lot of that was sideways!!! The other thing is that vaughan and colback have the ability to give others time on the ball as they dont take too many touches to get the ball under control.

Thought he was very good. Generally very accurate with his passes, won all his tackles, and kept taking responsibility on the ball.

Cattermole does one thing very well which is mess up the opposiitons play and pressurise the opposition.

Unfortuntley he also messes up our own play much of the time, is an utter liability, refuses to learn from his mistakes and gives away dangerous free kicks on a near enough serial basis. He would be my last choice to play in CM for that reason, his bad points far outweighh the good.

This. Meyler is head and shoulders above both Colback and Cattermole, he should be back in the side.

Meyler got a bit of a clattering in the first couple of minutes of the reserve

match the other night but still played on for a good while,

maybe just feeling the knock abit, but should definitely start when (if) fit
