Jack Clarke

Pickford?
Yes, forgot him. I think Quinn’s quote (I’m sure it was him - not sure if it was when he was a player or chairman) was more aimed at established pros becoming restless for a move/better contract. A lot later but we had lads like djilabodji and ndong deciding they were a lot bigger and better than SAFC. Even when we dropped to L1 they didn’t end up at a much higher level and I bet they’re nowhere near the level we are at now.

Aye, I agree. If there was a complete list of all the Sunderland players in the last 40 years I bet I would have heard of all of them from the first half. In the second 20 years there would be loads of names I wouldn't have heard of. The amount of money the club has pissed away in transfer fees, agent fees and wages on failures who have contributed very little is staggering.

He's obviously a decent lad and a very talented footballer. However, he played for Sunderland in The Championship. We haven't exactly blown that league away. Remember back to The Mags when they won their first 10 on the bounce in the second tier, including a derby win.

But Sunderland fans, and no doubt other fans, are often unable to remove their rose-tinted specs when they see their own players week-in, week-out. I remember writing to Terry Butcher when I was a kid begging him not to sell "world-class" Gary Owers. His poster was on my wall alongside Gordon Armstrong, Marco, John Kay and Tony Norman.

Jack Clarke will reach his natural level, and that is probably in The Championship, which is where Pisswich Town are heading. We got a decent fee in return for us losing his services. At the end of the season if we manage to get promoted we'll likely pass him on the Pisswich bus coming the other way. He will likely regret his decision in the long-term but he will be richer. It was probably a no-brainer decision at the time.

I wish the lad luck and I hope that he can get a run in the side, score some goals and enjoy his football against top class opposition. But ultimately I think I will return to playing Championship football from next season onwards.

Pickford?
I like the lad.

I thought he did a brave thing by leaving Spurs and coming to us to prove himself.

I was just really surprised he jumped so quickly to Ipswich after making thd same mistake earlier in his career.

Maybe ultimately money is the big thing for him.

I really would like to see nim succeed but it is becoming more doubtful every week.

I still think he’s good enough to play in the premier league.

He’s moved to a team that’s going to get beat nearly every game and isn’t the only one struggling in that team.

I’d have him back in a heartbeat and would be happy to keep him if we went up.

Clarke was class for us but with the rose tinted glasses off he’s not as good as we think he is. Up until recent injuries we haven’t missed him at all. Selling him has so far worked better for us than it has for him. He has been advised poorly and it’s a shame to see his career stalling. He gave his all for us despite all the links away and I would like to see him do well, I just think he’s going to be one of them players that are good in the championship but won’t ever kick on and be good enough at the right end of the prem.

Speakman said it was the only club that bid for him and tbf we weren't looking like we were going anywhere fast in the summer. He maybe thought it was better to showcase himself in a lowly PL team than an average Championship one.

Looking at where we were last season and how we fell apart after Christmas it was no surprise at all that Clarke decided the time was right to move on. We have managed very well without him with Mundle and Watson looking very promising in that position. For Clarke though it would seem that the Ipswich move in hindsight wasn’t the best for his career and here’s why. He is 24 years old and no longer a prospect but someone who should be at the level his talents deserve and that as it stands is on the bench for a very poor side getting beat every week. I mean imagine being beat every week pretty much and still you don’t get a run in the side to prove yourself. Also add in how Ipswich play and the fact Clarke is playing inside which isn’t his game at all. He is t going to improve by not getting minutes and the game will pass him by. Some have said well it will be a good move for Ipswich as they will have a top championship p,Ayer next season, but I don’t see it that way at all. Put yourself in Clarkes shoes where you have been overlooked in the division where you wanted to prove yourself and then are expected to bust a gut to get the same manager back up to the prem. to conclude here’s what I see happening. Ipswich will go down and Clarke will lack the motivation to impress there and want if not demand a move. If Leeds don’t go up I see him going there or to another side at the top end in the championship. I can’t see another club ourselves included if we go up having a punt on him I really don’t.

He looked lost when he eventually came on against Arsenal last night. Hope the lad goes on from strength to strength but.......

Showed he wasn’t prem quality against the mags last year when an average trippier completely nullified him.

He enjoyed it here and fit the club and system and might have made a better effort of the prem getting there with us.

He wanted that chance and more money, hasnt worked out so far

I wouldn't be happy with that, no.

Even if I was rich I would still want my kids to work.

I believe Bill Gates and other very successful business leaders have stated they won't be leaving their fortunes to their children. I don't think it is healthy to encourage children NOT to work... whether that is 3rd and 4th generation dole seekers or children of very wealthy parents.
Inherited wealth may work well in established family businesses - like our owners. However, when the money comes from fame such as sports stars, film stars and rock stars it can ruin lives.

Alcohol, drugs, failed relationships await.

Ian Harte really has fucked this lads development by pushing for moves away, he hardly playing these days, I can see him going out on loan inn January more than likely.
Development ???? He’s already developed man Harte has done his job and massive developed jacks bank balance

That was more to do with our manager spending half the game f***ing about with short goal kicks.

No it didn’t. It was one game where we didn’t turn up under Beale.

If you want to play by your own rules, he showed he was a good premiership player the season before when he scored 2 in 2 against Fulham.

Mental how many people mention the mags game and how it proved he wouldn’t make it as a premiership player

If he’d signed a 5 year contract with us he’d of been set for life, ok on maybe half the money but he’d of been happy and enjoying his football , there’s more to life than money
If you're playing for a championship club and a prem club come in for you , it's pretty depressing if you don't want to further your ambitions and have a go at the top of your sport just cos you're comfortable where you are.
Zero ambition if the player does that.
There's more to life than money - I think he'd have gone and think he should have gone if the money was the same.
Players want to play in the top league.
They will then want to play for clubs in Europe.
It's not difficult to grasp and those romanticising on players playing in a worse league cos the fans love him don't live in the real world , imo

Can't blame Ipswich for giving it their best shot and signing whoever they can. Shame for Jack Clarke that they signed Szmodics, so he might be surplus to requirements if they need to strengthen somewhere else - they'll not lose much on JC and he'd have a lot of suitors. They might be ruthless, I'm kinda expecting it. They might not go down, but if they do they'll keep McKenna and the majority of their talent.
He didn't have many suitors when he was here. Only offer came from Ipswich. Why would he all of a sudden have a load of suitors after one failed season in the Premiership?

Twice he's jumped to a Premier League club, and it looks like twice it has backfired football wise.

Shame, cos I really want him to do well. He worked so fuckin hard while he was with us to prove himself.
