Is this squad better than the Peter Reid 7th sides?

This one for me, seems to have strength in depth. The side that came 7th twice with Quinn and Phillips etc were good but this crop of players are better IMO.

No for the first squad that finished 7th, yes for the second imo

Actually bollocks to my first point i Think as an overall team the first team that finished 7th are better than the current. But the squad is weaker.

You might well be right. In fact you are, but that's no guarantee we'll finish as high. Mainly because LIFE'S A BITCH!

Yes. Back then you only really had 4 decent teams, then everyone else was pretty average. Spurs, Everton, VIlla and Man City can all be added to that, making games harder.

And, as you say, the squad is far far better. One thing about both those seasons, is how poor we were in the second half of the season. We had kids and plodders on the bench. When injuries and suspensions took their toll, we struggled for results.

If you consider now, we have Gyan, Mensah and Campbell to come back from injury and are doing fine without (well we could have done with Gyan against Everton), Da Silva can't even get on as sub, McCartney is nowhere near the team, Reid has been sent out on loan, and we have the likes of Elmo, Malbranque, Mingolet and usually Ferdinand warming the bench.

If you picked our best 11, you could find 8-9 players not in the team that could form a team that could stay up. We would never have said that under Reid, with Fredguarrd and Nunez on the bench.

It will be if it manages to finish 6th. Nothing proved yet.

This team is playing a completely different generation of players so to finish 6th this season doesn't really prove anything. Hypothetically speaking where do you think the current team would have finished back then?

I honestly think that the current team would have finished ahead of Leeds and perhaps (as there was only one point between them) ahead of Liverpool too. Third or fourth for me. Things have changed though. There are more very good teams in the league than there were back then and anyone can beat anyone on their day.

We'll finish a very respectable seventh or eighth this season.

Depends what you mean.

Player for player, yes.

How it functions as a unit, no, not yet.

Agreed (I presume you mean the PR squad was weaker?).

Think the difference is that the PR team had greater firepower in SNQ/SKP, who were more than a match for any defence.

Not sure I entirely agree. Man for man you could easily argue the two strikers then were better than now, also Summerbee, Schwarz and McCann would all get in our team now as would Mickey Gray. Bould would get in our team as well but he was fit for nearly as long as Mensah, so not sure he really counts. Our squad is better now but throw both of those first teams in against each other and our current lot would struggle with the strength of Reid's team.

Both teams have their merits, the prem was a lot different then and hat squad did very well.
I think to compare them at this stage is a little premature, however I do think that if this young side keeps on improving it will eclipse the achievements of the PR side.

I'd have to disagree with them like, assuming that KR is still our default left back.

I find myself in the strange position of actually agreeing totally.

We have a team of players of a much better quality, but in terms of teamwork, I am yet to be convinced we can put on the kind of displays we have seen against the so-called Big Four and Tottenham, against the whole range of teams in the Premier League.

Exactly - Reid's team destroyed some lesser quality opposition, we seem to struggle against them at the moment.
