Leisure real estate advisory business Stärka has won two new instructions from Sunderland City Council.
The company has been appointed as an advisor on the council’s plans to deliver a 60,000 sq ft entertainment district (pictured) on the site of the former Crowtree Leisure Centre in the city centre.
Stärka has also been appointed to advise on the leasing of the leisure space within the Sunniside Leisure scheme.
Sammy Jones, co-founder of Stärka, said: “We are delighted to be advising Sunderland City Council on the implementation of its bold vision to transform the city centre. The entertainment district will be a new focal point for Sunderland’s social and cultural economy, and will be the perfect place in which emerging and established F&B and leisure operators can build thriving businesses. The quality, scale, and opportunity the council is creating are inspiring, and we share the team’s commitment to delivering something truly outstanding for the city.”
Very interesting, unsure how it works with the cinema being in sunniside

Real shame if its not going to be an arena or similar. That would fill the gap between empire and sol in venue size. It'd also bring jobs and visitors to the city. Interested to see what we do get though.

The arena should've never been planned in the first place. It was complete pie in the sky stuff, this what is planned now should've been built years ago, arguably before Sunniside was even built. Anyone could see the Crowtree was finished when they shut the ice rink in 2000 but it limped on for another 13 year generally closing in stages.

Got told today Crowtree was full of RAC concrete?

Nothing wring with high aspirerations, in fact we need more. Lots of work done but much still to do.

Not sure, possibly it's certainly from that era.

Better to have something attracting people to the city than nothing though. The building has been limbo for the best part of 25 year now and it's still not really any further forward. If past councils (not the current) had ambition, the best thing they could've done was replace the leisure centre with a leisure facility for the future instead of letting it get in limbo.

This should've been planned in 2000. Might've shut up the Crowtree lot aswell who can't move on either.

Oh I agree crowtree needs developing and fast. Just that the initial plan would change things for the better. Plan b may well lead to plan a on another site.
