Is Middlesbrough a derby game?

Every time we play each other this question gets asked so it can’t be much of a derby can it?
There’s been more trouble than a ‘normal’ game over the years but that’s the same with all teams that are relatively close to us - Leeds, Hartlepool, Darlo even Carlisle.
Historically going back to the 70's there has been considerably more bother against boro than any other club (mags excluded).

No. I've just been reading echo comments from the other day and Middlesbrough supporters are flinging their toys out the pram that we or Newcastle don't consider it a derby. There's even someone from Leeds telling us it's a derby😄

It’s pathetic to say it’s not a Derby game. If we were playing Gateshead, Spennymoor, Darlo or Pools it is also a Derby game. Boro are local there are schools in south Durham where students support either club and workplaces which employ supporters of both clubs. Of course it’s not a match with anywhere near the intensity of the wear / Tyne Derby but that’s another question. The arsehole mag Michael Martin was going on about how insignificant SAFC are these days to them. Its bollocks and I put it on the same level of arrogance as the safc fans dismissing Boro as insignificant.

Not really. It’s a game with regional significance but the emotions a game against Boro bring just aren’t on the level of a ‘Derby’ game imo. But it’s still a bit more stirring than a run of the mill league game.

No 100%, in the past I would of said yes 10 years ago but even though the game is tomorrow, I don't feel that nervous or have the on edge vibe you get when you play the scummy mags, Boro are just a smog ridden town in Yorkshire, just an irrelevant team nowadays, win tomorrow great, draw ok, lose not the end of the world as still would be above them in the table. Might be the smogmutants biggest game for years but far from ours!

Na its like ya playing ya retarded cousin at snap
Only 1 derby i know and it doesnt involve mongos climbing out of chimneys down seal sands to see a home game next that bloke near mc donslds near groud who eats mud for his existance. Like f***ing 28 days later away to them *****

Of course its a derby. This boro ain't a derby crack has coincided with the rise of social media.

It's nothing like the mags games. But it's definitely a derby.

Yeah social media has changed a lot of things with rivalries and will continue to do so. The world is a lot smaller and fans from all over the country are arguing with eachother on Twitter etc. It was a lot different years ago.

Our game against Derby last year became huge from social media. Fans from both clubs bickering about Steve Gibson. By the time the game came round there was serious animosity. After the game there was a fair amount of trouble. It was fed by social media.

We also had something similar with Burnley a few years ago.

Not what I perceive to be a derby, but a little more to it then a normal game.

However where we fall foul, is that they attach more to this game than we do and therefore they come into it more fired up. With Mowbray involved, he should get the players worked up for it and I'm fairly confident of a result.

Middlesbrough is a town in North Yorkshire, I've never thought of it as a derby game. It might well be classed by the Smoggies as a derby, it's a big game for them I suppose but just another game for us. The media can spin this all they like but it's definitely not a derby.

I think it's a derby, but I don't get the "end of the world" feeling, if I think about losing it.
The Mags game gives me gut wrenching nerves for days beforehand, but this one doesn't.
Still want to win for bragging rights though.
