Is Middlesbrough a derby game?

You see, I don't like this calling other clubs 'insignificant' .
Arrogance in the extreme.
Every club is significant to their own supporters.

Always was pretty savage between those two.
Were in same division as each other for a long time too.
Agree totally with point one

Yes every club is all important to their fans, however other clubs fans don't see it like that. I don't give Hartlepool FC a second thought. I've
been told on here by Sunderland fans that we mean nothing to them. I'm sure Liverpool and Everton fans very rarely give the little club from Birkenhead
a second thought. It's not arrogance its life the little and weak get ignored. Is it right prob not but it is how it is.

It’s a step up from a normal game for sure but it’s nowhere near when we play the mags. Not sure what that makes it. But for example if that was Boro playing Liverpool the other day when that 98th minute winner went in I wouldn’t have hit the roof like I did and shout get in ya bastards. I’d probably have felt a bit sorry for Boro!

I’m not looking forward to the game any more than any of our other games this season, which says it all really.
It’s just not the same when you don’t ever encounter any of their fans other than the odd gonk you see online. I’ve met about 4 Boro supporters in my life through work and even then they followed Man U/Liverpool aswell.

Just seen this discussion.

For me the answer's no.

It's a nice bit of regional pride to beat them, but otherwise I don't find I have a reason to despise them like the mags or feel strong emotions.

I also seen a thought provoking reply to that noting that we don't hold grudges against our former players who go there either (Arca, Leadbitter) whereas that's not the case with those up the road.
No.....for me as a fan winning or losing against boro is like winning or losing against Cardiff or PNE..just another game.

Was a huge game in 70s, 80s & 90s shame lot of the youngsters just dismiss it now.
Agree with this -just about to ring my uncle -top bloke 80 years old -season ticket holder well ..forever ! at the Boro .
He’s “ upgraded “ this season to hospitality -“ why not it’s my day out” ?
Always been banter back and forth with family and for me personally it’s more important than a normal match .
I will tell him may the best team win ( obv dint mean that but he speaks warmly about us -always has done and especially our fans )
They are playing well but not getting results at mo …Hope we turn up -this will be a tough tough game HTL

Their over inflated opinion of themselves is hilarious, they think they’re some sort of mutant super club.😂

So, just looked this up (as I like to think you should only have one ‘derby’ which is your greatest rival/adversary type match) but really the dictionary definition relates to being from ‘the same area or city’. By that definition, you need to define what the area is and would also mean that if we played Gateshead in Cup match, that would have to be a derby as it’s closer than The Mags.

There’s a massive obsession with LFC on Teeside like, not sure why, can’t say I’ve encountered many MUFC “fans” A few walking round Boro town centre with training tops etc on but that’s about it.

The vast majority of the boro fans I know think exactly the same about sunlun.
I think the comment is more appropriate to your club than ours tbh by a country mile

Is 33 mile between the grounds a derby?
Although palace and Brighton is deemed a derby 41 miles apart
Palace and Brighton isn't a derby - no-one from either side claims it is. It's a rivalry.
But since we've been in the EPL together, Sky have started with this "A23 Derby" bollocks - that phrase had never been used prior to 2017.
