Is Middlesbrough a derby game?

I noticed some Newcastle fans obviously on the wind up on twitter saying this is now Sunderland's main game as they are now operating on a different level.

Embrace it lads 😜
Same old boring patter from the scum whenever they come in to money.
Same schpeel when Hall took over in 92 but didn't take long before we finished above them twice in a row 99/00 and 00/01 despite them being minted and us paupers.
Always been boring gobshites and always will be

Not for me. The week leading up to playing Newcastle, it’s all I can think about. Feel sick/nervous etc.

Boro is just another game to me.

Even if i enjoy a win against boro, i enjoy telling smoggies that it is a normal game.

Perfect derby, rip piss if we do win or rip piss if we don't.

Not for me I would much rather beat Leeds for example. I work in Boro small bit of banter goes on but nothing like between us and the mags.

Used to feel almost sick on Derby day and I was in my 30s before I saw a home won v the scum how I miss those days.

Really, every time I've been to the pools I get the feeling the hate us. Besides how can we be bothered by an insignificant outfit like them.
You see, I don't like this calling other clubs 'insignificant' .
Arrogance in the extreme.
Every club is significant to their own supporters.
They aren't bothered about Boro. They can't stand Darlington though.
Always was pretty savage between those two.
Were in same division as each other for a long time too.

Throughout my lifetime I'd always classed it as a derby. I remember being genuinely surprised when I first started coming on here and read comments from Sunderland fans saying that it wasn't a derby and they don't care about Boro - especially after experiencing the hostile atmosphere whenever we played each other in the past.

I think it's a shame that supporters on both sides play it down. Even some Boro fans are now saying "it's just another game".

As supporters we should embrace this kind of thing. Give me a game vs yourselves, Newcastle and Leeds any day of the week ahead of playing the likes of Norwich and Fulham.

Copied my post from the earlier thread….

It is a derby. It will be a higher attendance than other games. The atmosphere will be vastly different. The last two statement are absolute facts, therefore it cannot be regarded as the same as all other league games. It is not on the Mags level but I still class it as a derby.

Just seen this discussion.

For me the answer's no.

It's a nice bit of regional pride to beat them, but otherwise I don't find I have a reason to despise them like the mags or feel strong emotions.

I also seen a thought provoking reply to that noting that we don't hold grudges against our former players who go there either (Arca, Leadbitter) whereas that's not the case with those up the road.
Of course it's a derby. What nonsense is this. It's not as fierce and intense as our other derby, but still a derby.

I think the younger generation of Boro fans who don't see sunderland as a big game or a derby don't know the history and never experienced what it was like in the 70s and 80s? Shame really it's heading to a nothing game between the clubs now, (the more we keep saying it, the more it diminishes it) but hey ho at least Sunderland fans can drink around the town now without any aggro which is a big plus.
