Not this again. Yes it’s a derby despite it becoming tediously fashionable in recent years to pretend otherwise. Less important that Tyne Wear derby but still a derby.

Same old boring patter from the scum whenever they come in to money.I noticed some Newcastle fans obviously on the wind up on twitter saying this is now Sunderland's main game as they are now operating on a different level.
Embrace it lads![]()
There has been times when Leeds and Hull were our closest non-Mag rivals in the same division. That's why I included them.No
Hull ?
Wtf ?
You might as well include Sheffield![]()
You treat it like a derby and I wish we did as you always seem more up for it than we do.I’d say it is
Really, every time I've been to the pools I get the feeling the hate us. Besides how can we be bothered by an insignificant outfit like them.Nah
Hartlepool don't care about them either
They aren't bothered about Boro. They can't stand Darlington though.Really, every time I've been to the pools I get the feeling the hate us. Besides how can we be bothered by an insignificant outfit like them.
You see, I don't like this calling other clubs 'insignificant' .Really, every time I've been to the pools I get the feeling the hate us. Besides how can we be bothered by an insignificant outfit like them.
Always was pretty savage between those two. They aren't bothered about Boro. They can't stand Darlington though.
Nailed it.To them, yes
To us, no.
Of course it's a derby. What nonsense is this. It's not as fierce and intense as our other derby, but still a derby.
Just seen this discussion.
For me the answer's no.
It's a nice bit of regional pride to beat them, but otherwise I don't find I have a reason to despise them like the mags or feel strong emotions.
I also seen a thought provoking reply to that noting that we don't hold grudges against our former players who go there either (Arca, Leadbitter) whereas that's not the case with those up the road.
I think the younger generation of Boro fans who don't see sunderland as a big game or a derby don't know the history and never experienced what it was like in the 70s and 80s? Shame really it's heading to a nothing game between the clubs now, (the more we keep saying it, the more it diminishes it) but hey ho at least Sunderland fans can drink around the town now without any aggro which is a big plus.Throughout my lifetime I'd always classed it as a derby. I remember being genuinely surprised when I first started coming on here and read comments from Sunderland fans saying that it wasn't a derby and they don't care about Boro - especially after experiencing the hostile atmosphere whenever we played each other in the past.
I think it's a shame that supporters on both sides play it down. Even some Boro fans are now saying "it's just another game".
As supporters we should embrace this kind of thing. Give me a game vs yourselves, Newcastle and Leeds any day over the week ahead of playing the likes of Norwich and Fulham.
