Is Middlesbrough a derby game?

Yes it is, Middlesbrough is just in the north east so it's a north east derby, it just doesn't hold the feelings the mags does. Although being someone who had mates down there and an ex when I was a teenager I always wanted us to smash them so I could feel superior haha.

This, not a deby but a bit more spicy than West Brom away for example.

Mind you, they way some are going on Stoke is bigger than Newcastle & Boro combined now.

Why so many on here are wasting time getting angry about AN is beyond me.

He's got a family and his own life to secure man . Do you think he made much from his playing career, or managing Hamilton, Norwich and Preston ??

He's doubled his money from 10k to 20k (we offered him 15k to counter Stokes 20k offer btw) so good luck to him.

The way he went about it wasn't the best, but it happens all the time (doesn't make it right, I know) and let's face it, if he went on a bad run of results, he'd be shown no loyalty and given the bullet without anyone batting an eyelid .

We have acquired a good man and reputedly a very good coach so let's just move on and forget about the villification of Stoke and AN.

Strange one as probably more of our fans live closer to Boro than Newcastle but its never felt that big to me.

I've never met a Boro fan who was bothered about us either all the ones I know class either the mags or Leeds as their main rivals

Boro seem to hate the mags nearly as much as we do. It's because they are universally unlikeable.

For me it’s a derby but people from British West Hartlepool live closer to their ground than they do to ours. I imagine to our fans from Billingham, Stockton and parts of South East Durham it’s a derby too.

Definitely a bit more intensity than usual games but it's not a real derby or our derby. I live in Seaton and can see their ground after driving five minutes from my house, I also work in Stockton and still don't get the intensity or feeling of knowing the game is just around the corner.
It's usually a game I don't look forward to as for years and years (especially in Boro) we haven't done very well. I dreaded Newcastle home games when we'd gone donkeys years without winning

Just seen this discussion.

For me the answer's no.

It's a nice bit of regional pride to beat them, but otherwise I don't find I have a reason to despise them like the mags or feel strong emotions.

I also seen a thought provoking reply to that noting that we don't hold grudges against our former players who go there either (Arca, Leadbitter) whereas that's not the case with those up the road.
Why nor man.

Huge amount of Mags in Teesside and South Durham and they are the worst kind that only go to a midweek cup game once a season. I'd say in Darlington of the North East Teams its about 90:5:5 in the mags favour although season card holders would be a much more even split.

Sunderland is 30 miles from Middlesborough.

Arsenal v Watford are only 15 miles apart but you would be laughed at if you suggested that was a derby game?
Tbf, there's a dearth of pro clubs in our region compared to London where there's what, 10/15 clubs ?
I think the last few times Boro have played Sunderland at home, it’s never been near their biggest attendance neither, although this time it will close to being a sell out.
Really, that does genuinely surprise me .

I have been at AP when there's been less than 13k but they still made a good noise.
Also been at RP when under 17k there - Lee Howey winner.

Why no it’s not.

A team from North Yorkshire. When we get beat by them it’s just another defeat for me. I don’t know any boro fans.

I know shitloads of mags

Not for me. I get more focused playing Coventry than Boro. The last time we played them in the cup a few seasons ago I went and did an Amazon delivery slot, it's just another game.

Just because it's a local ish game doesn't mean it's a derby.
Derby games are city's or towns next to each other not 30 miles away.
I can see where people are coming from because there in the same league.
