Is Middlesbrough a derby game?

Bit more in it than a usual game but not enough to be a derby I’d say.
This, not a deby but a bit more spicy than West Brom away for example.

Mind you, they way some are going on Stoke is bigger than Newcastle & Boro combined now.

It’ll be a belter that like looking forward to it

I’m gonna make a “baldy” banner and throw piss at him

Nope, it’s in a different area.

If Hartlepool or Darlington were fairly successful it would never be considered a derby just the smogs have nobody else.

It’s like Bolton playing Man City, close by but nothing is made of it.

Yes, but nowt like Skunks and I suspect it is more pertinent for those in the south of County Durham. I don't hate Boro and have been known to cheer them on in games but feel better if we beat them. It was accepted as a derby for decades without question but now it seems like some strange trend to dismiss it like it's a game against Mansfield or Port Vale, it means more than that.

Being from East Durham you never see any boro fans to care about them until you’re due to play them. It’s different with the mags as they’re always there to remind you that they’re apparently massive and they get on ya tits.

Put it this way, I’m helping moving furniture and sorting stuff round the house today.

I’ll probably give more thought to the game tomorrow. If we we’re playing the mags, I’d be on the lash to calm the nerves, watching re-runs of the 6 in a row / previous derbies and have been shitting through the eye of needle all week with the nerves.

There is an historic rivalry between us and Boro, but it certainly isn’t our derby and if we get beat I won’t really feel any worse than a loss against anyone else.

For me it’s a derby but people from British West Hartlepool live closer to their ground than they do to ours. I imagine to our fans from Billingham, Stockton and parts of South East Durham it’s a derby too.

Just seen this discussion.

For me the answer's no.

It's a nice bit of regional pride to beat them, but otherwise I don't find I have a reason to despise them like the mags or feel strong emotions.

I also seen a thought provoking reply to that noting that we don't hold grudges against our former players who go there either (Arca, Leadbitter) whereas that's not the case with those up the road.
I have a come on this board, quite a few times over the years, (more so when we are in the same division) and I must have at least seen 10 threads like this on Boro? They go on for page after page, 10000 views, Sunderland lads going into great detail sometimes why it isn’t a derby! Why is it so important for your lot to distinguish this? And why is it so important in general? Enjoy the game, it’s a football match with quite a lot history between the clubs and supporters over the years on and off the pitch...yes it doesn’t have the feeling between lads like it did in the 70s and 80s, but it’s still a game we should all look forward too without thinking why?

On this, just moved to Hetton and the amount of scruffy mags ***** in the Houghton/Hetton area is mental. Even the bloke in his 60s next door is a Saudi apologist.
