Is Middlesbrough a derby game?

It’s certainly more than just another game. My first full season supporting Sunderland was the first year at the SoL and Boro seemed to be in our way a lot that year. Think they did the double over us and also knocked us out of the League Cup. So ever since that season this game has meant just that little bit more to me.

lol. they are mainly manchester utd or liverpool fans around there these days (hoy in some arsenal) and don't try to use the geordie thing as much
You do see the odd man united/Liverpool 'fan' around, but that's really the same in most towns (sunderland included), but I've never known a Boro fan (from the Tees area) class him/herself as a Geordie.

its not common to find proper man utd etc supporters in Sunderland. Same as Newcastle, you don't find them unless they are uni students etc. I know a few boro lads. All sound lads like but I don't think any of them support boro. i am not having a go. just my experience.

And I might be wrong but the thing about calling themselves Geordies was back in the 70s or 80s. like i said i doubt people from teesside would say that today in 2022.

Agree about Newcastle (only football shirts I see around there are black n white).
Can't agree about your last point though - I was born in Middlesbrough and was brought up north of the river, been going to Boro matches since 1972 and I can't remember a single Teessider ever saying they were a Geordie.

Boro fans have always took the Mick out of the accent.

well like i said, i could be wrong on that regarding the geordie thing.

and same for sunderland, you only see red and white. newcastle black and white. boro is a strange one though, loads of north west teams!

It was the only derby match I knew when I first started watching the lads, very entertaining seeing them getting humped and kicked all over The Roker End. My dad did explain to me I would come to realise it wasnt a real derby

I think it depends on who wishes it to be a derby.
People can go by a northeast derby but where does the northeast start and actually end and for who?
How many northeast clubs can be added to the equation?

Realistically a derby is clubs in a city, such as Rangers and Celtic or Liverpool and Everton and Man Utd and Man City and so on.

Newcastle v Sunderland is classed as a northeast derby and is the most significant based on the intense rivalry but is it any more of a derby than the rest?

It's all about the mileage argument and is there a set mileage for who becomes part of a derby?
If there isn't a mileage argument then lots of clubs can be added into a derby but it comes down to each individual as to what takes precedence and we all know Newcastle v Sunderland takes massive precedence among the fans of both clubs.

Hartlepool v Darlington was classed as the bigger derby, yet Middlesbrough is closer but they've generally been leagues apart.
If Hartlepool had gone into the same league as Middlesbrough then does that make Middlebrough take precedence over Darlington?

intercity derby basically. border to border is probably for safc v nufc is probably less than 5 miles. going from washy. there is probably less distance between the areas than arsenal tottenham

I think the younger generation of Boro fans who don't see sunderland as a big game or a derby don't know the history and never experienced what it was like in the 70s and 80s? Shame really it's heading to a nothing game between the clubs now, (the more we keep saying it, the more it diminishes it) but hey ho at least Sunderland fans can drink around the town now without any aggro which is a big plus.
Can they bollocks !

In the 70’s I remember our season derby game being Leets, Sheffield, Burnley etc.

Sometimes it was the boro - FTB

But … these were that seasons derby game & def not The Derby - allus reserved for the great unwashed

Mate, the last two times Sunderland has been to Boro, there has been no trouble zero arrested, loads of sunderland drinking around town, they where just lads out for a drink and know body bothered them, the only trouble I have seen in the last 6 seasons was Derby at home, and that was because they had told everyone on social media they where coming for that reason and it did get nasty, over 70 arrests.
