Is Middlesbrough a derby game?

Yeah social media has changed a lot of things with rivalries and will continue to do so. The world is a lot smaller and fans from all over the country are arguing with eachother on Twitter etc. It was a lot different years ago.

Our game against Derby last year became huge from social media. Fans from both clubs bickering about Steve Gibson. By the time the game came round there was serious animosity. After the game there was a fair amount of trouble. It was fed by social media.

We also had something similar with Burnley a few years ago.
I couldn't believe what I was reading with the Derby lads threatening to smash middlesbrough up? ( this isn't going to end well for them) To be fair they did turn up and try, but soon realised they had made a mistake, watching them running back to the train station after the match with the police struggling to stop Boro lads pouring through police lines was something I hadn't seen in a long time..the youtube clips are quite funny and them complaining about how the police couldn't control the situation..they soon changed their tune.

Not a derby for me, though I love it when the Smoggies get rattled when we say it's not. Even Hartlepool and Darlo fans can't be arsed with them.

Hope Stockton Town rattle up the league pyramid so they can finally have a derby fixture of their own 😄

Not what I perceive to be a derby, but a little more to it then a normal game.

However where we fall foul, is that they attach more to this game than we do and therefore they come into it more fired up. With Mowbray involved, he should get the players worked up for it and I'm fairly confident of a result.
Again I don't buy into that. Every Boro vs Sunderland game I've been to there's always been an intense atmosphere, and your fans more than contribute to that.

The last time we played you in the cup and you brought 6k fans, large groups of your supporters were singing "We hate Boro" and those other provocative songs outside the stadium before the game. Was only a crowd of 26k there and I'd say it was your supporters who seemed to be treating it as a cup final.

There's always an edge to the game, but its no where near as gut wrenching like a mags game. It's far easier to get over if we lose.....

Imo it's a bigger deal to Boro fans

I’m north of the Wear and amongst mags so that’s the derby. Hardly ever meet a boro fan so almost just another game for me. Can understand how south Durham take it more seriously, but getting points is the most important thing for me in this game.

Back in the 70s we let them know whenever they visited Roker.

You're not real Geordies..was the song.

Just seen this discussion.

For me the answer's no.

It's a nice bit of regional pride to beat them, but otherwise I don't find I have a reason to despise them like the mags or feel strong emotions.

I also seen a thought provoking reply to that noting that we don't hold grudges against our former players who go there either (Arca, Leadbitter) whereas that's not the case with those up the road.
Answer is no. Its not and it never will be to us.

To them, it is and that's the difference

When l was young and first started supporting the lads, back in the 60’s, any game between us the mags and Boro was always classed as a derby, especially in the local media. If all three teams were in the same division there used to be an unofficial mini league between us, the team with most points from their four games were awarded “The Cock of the North” trophy, quite an amusing name nowadays! I’m sure older members of the board will remember this? But l have to admit to me the only “real” derby is us and the mags!

it's a derby, just like l'pool v man utd, leeds v sheff utd, b'mouth v soton, norwich v ipswich (45 miles) and so on...

not much of an insult I'm pure bred Yorkshire not a plastic geordie. Now our fans north of the river may have
been upset by it but not me.

I can't ever imagine any Boro fans (from North or South of the river) ever classing themselves as Geordies.

I don’t class it as a Derby. I get nervous as fuck for the Mags game, my guts are normally all over the shop. Not even remotely nervous for the Boro games. Maybe if I lived and worked amongst them I’d feel differently?
