Is Leeds Utd a derby?

Will always be "Dirty Leeds" to us older fans, but the only thing that gives this an edge is seeing 3 points covers us in 6th to 13th in the table. Big game on that basis.

Wasn't some of the initial animosity due to Bobby Park's broken leg, down there??

Not a Derby, but I always like to see them get beat.

Goes way further back than that. At least to 66/67, when Hunter broke Kerr's leg, and then Revie bought off the ref to make sure we lost the second replay of a 5th round cup tie. A year or two before I started going, but I believe there were also incidents in 62/63 when we were both challenging for promotion..

In my experience, and I live amongst them, the main non-local obsession that some of their fans have (if you stretch your point and count Man United as local) and only then of a certain age, is from a 70s cup final, but it’s not us, it’s Chelsea. Guess they have a bit of a thing with Millwall too. Never met one who cares about us.

Hiya Angelos 😊 Have to "agree to disagree" with you re: Leeds being a "big club" Yes, they were competitive for a 10 year period, no denying that. But their history pre and post that era was one of grinding mediocrity. I realise of course that many will not agree with my assessment. Sunderland on the other hand? well, take a wild guess!!

After that decade long era in 60's and 70's we were Champions of England 92. Followed by 7 top 5 finishes until relegation in 2004. Throw in Champions League semi-final and Europa League semi-final. Chuck in a League cup final. Certainly, the period of doing a Leeds from 2004- Bielsa's arrival can be classed as mediocre but I wouldnt say the 92-2002 period was. I reckon Sunderland would have bitten your hand off for that type of mediocrity.

I can recall sitting at my Uncle Charlie's place, boxing day 1963, Leeds V Sunderland was the commentary game on the BBC radio. God almighty! THAT was a "rugged affair" was that! At one stage I thought I was listening to "Grandstand's fight of the week":lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol: They were both ultimately promoted. Oddly enough, my lot played both sides in the FA Cup that season.............. and we know where THAT took us :lol::lol::lol::lol:
I was at that game, first away game unaccompanied by an adult. Aged 15.

I got told then story of a Leeds player breaking one of our players legs at Elland Road.

In the return game at Roker Park the players were out on the pitch before the match and one of our defenders - Hurley? Ashurst? Irwin? - went over and said to the player that he was going to get both legs broken.

just before the game it was announced that there was a change to the starting lineup - the Leeds player picked up an 11th hour injury and couldn't play.
