Irvine Welsh / Trainspotting

Finally got round to watching T2 last night and started looking at the books on amazon.

The books don’t look to be in sync with the films though.

Anyone read the books and watched the films can shed some light on it? The amazon reviews etc don’t really help other than I worked out one was a prequel.

I fancy reading whichever book follows on from T2, is this the dead man trousers one?

Cheers

There's a few involving the Trainspotting characters. Porno is one. Skag Boys is a kind of prequel/sequel as far as I can remember. Begbie's story with Renton is far more elegantly finished than in the film iirc, and more in keeping with the random nature of the world they inhabit.

Haven't read The Blade Artist yet.

The first film more or less follows the central story in the book, albeit the book has far more characters and stories in it
The second film is nothing like the book and was a massive let down IMHO - just a nostalgia piece

I was hoping the second one followed the lines of Porno, which is a great read, but it just ran like a self-indulgent piece, as mentioned largely cashing in on the success of the first.
Exactly this. Porno was an excellent book and the story arc that ended up with Renton cheating Sick Boy again was brilliant. The film was shite

The book Porno is set in 2002-ten years on from Trainspotting while the film T2 was twenty years on.

Must say I also was really disappointed with the film as Porno is my favourite book by him but T2 seems to have more in common with Dead Mans Trousers.

By some distance the least believable of Welsh's novels.

Probably because it was written after T2 so used that as a tie in rather than porno. I enjoyed T2. To be fair I doubt they would have got it made if they'd stuck to the plot of Porno.

Trainspotting is first. Porno is the sequel, Skagboys came out after them both but is set before Trainspotting, the blade artist is about Begbie but ties into the series and Dead Mans Trousers is next. Glue is also good and came out before Porno and contains some of the same characters but isnt linked to the story.

Long time since I read it but I felt that Skag Boys was just the bits chopped out of his other books for not being good enough.
I'd recommending anyone going to see the live show if it if you get the chance. Certainly an experience you won't forget.

Interesting takes there!

So is it even worth me trying to read a book now cos it sounds like them and the films are at odds with each other anyhow.

I'd second the recommendation, the live show is fantastic. A couple of caveats though, don't sit next to the toilet or in throwing range of the quilt.

is spug supposed to be irvine welsh, in the film, as he is writing all these anecdotal stories and reading them out to begby, as if he were writing the stories from trainspotting ? or am i just imagining things? think i was stoned when i went to see T2 when it first came out

aren't all of his books just series' of short stories with reoccurring characters? i've only read trainspotting and seem to remember only about 50% of it being in the actual movie

Blade Artist was poor and. He pretty much admitted he knocked it out becauseBegbie stories are good sellers

Fuck the films, read the books and just get sucked into the world of welsh’s Leith. Was gutted when I watched t2 in the cinema, it could never be porno, as it would be nigh on impossible to film that, but on further watching, I’ve appreciated how Boyle has tied it into the first film, particularly showing them all as boys and that. A good terry Lawson film needs making like.
