The Irish bobsleigh team at the Winter Olympics are refusing to race until the course has been gritted

It’s inferring the Irish are that thick they turn up to a sport on ice and won’t compete till it’s gritted to stop it being slippy and you don’t think that’s a offensive?

It’s an old reinforcement of stereotypes that’s inherently racist

Exactly the sort of crass joke that the racist Bernard Manning would have come out with.

I've been to a couple of games in Inverness where the shinty lads took on the hurling boys in a mishmash international challenge. It's just like an 80 minute pub fight with pool cues.

A marra of mine is a Mayo supporter. Poor sod, especially after last year's final. He's convinced there's a curse on them Mayo travelling support is

Mayo supporters travel in huge numbers all over even when they played in New York a few years back plane loads went over. Don't look like they have much chance of ever winning Sam until the curse is lifted tho

I used to fly in every year for the All Ireland final and the plane from Manchester to Dublin would be completely packed with Mayo fans decked out in the red and green. Then when you got to Dublin Airport it was more of the same getting off flights from all over the world. They've had some misery over the years God love them

If ever Mayo win Sam the place will go mental. Number of times they have been up and down to Croker only to come away with nowt. End of an era now and big rebuild needed. Doubt I'll ever see Sam in my life time 😣

Looking that way unfortunately. Don't think we'll see the likes of O'Connor, O'Shea and Keegan back on the big stage. Any other era they'd have had at least one Sam. At least the underage teams are going well so hopefully something comes of that down the line

Durty Nellys was at the Mowbray Park hotel site and Rosie Malones was where Yeates is now.

Both cracking pubs but my favourite was TJ Doyles.

Still loads of Irish students in Sunderland studying Medicine Nursing Pharmacy Journalism Business Studies etc.

Some of them drink and work in the Saltgrass.

Why did Doyle’s close? Seemed to shut very abruptly as well

Ireland has the highest number of higher education graduates in the EU per head of population.

It’s a lazy stereotype.

Anyone into them?

I only ever encounter them when down the Irish pub. They’re not covered at all in any of the media that I watch or listen to.

I quite enjoy the hurling for its viciousness and the Gaelic football just because it is good to watch.

Are either of these sports played anywhere else in the world?
I think Hurling is one of the hardest and most skilful sports of all. Have been to a few games when in Ireland and the coordination, skill and toughness required to play at the top level is remarkable.

Fastest field sport in the world

This Limerick v Galway game is high paced

I watched a Kilkenny hurling semi-final in 2007, whilst the rest on the Irish pre-season tour got soaked at the match that was rained off.
