Stephen Ireland is looking for a January move away from Aston Villa. Fulham boss Mark Hughes is keen after the pair worked together at Manchester City, but the Cottagers would struggle to find the £8m asking price.

too much ?

would he still represent an improvement to our first XI. Possibly a sign of how quickly we have moved on as I'm not convinced he would.

if the deal was around £5 million, i think he could be a decent buy.

though he appears to be another modern footballer, with an overinflated view of his actual ability

too much money, to soon, for not much return, ireland. he is not the only one guilty of that though

Its about getting the best out of those type of players.

Hughes managed it with Bentley, Ireland and Bellamy and Bruce is a very similar kind of manager who seems to get the best out of players.

Any of the 3 named above would be massive progression on our part imo

Don't know where he would fit in. Henderson isn't going to be dropped, which is the obvious place for him, and Cattermole has to play or we're paper thin in the middle, and we could buy actual wingers or l/r midfielders for the money. If he wasn't a first choice he wouldn't come. He would improve the squad but nowhere obvious for him to be in a 4-4-2.

he could play in a similar style to malbranque and zenden

I dont see a problem with a figure around 6 but Im not sure if he can justify his wages. And if he doesnt your going to find it very difficult to get rid, see Anton Ferdinand.

it appears to me that malbranque is coming towards the end of his career at the top level. his legs are going, so eventually we need a replacement for that lad, who has done well for safc, over the last few years.

ireland could be the man

Similar to Bentley for me, hasn't played a lot, is overated IMO and to be honest I don't think he is worth £8 million.

I would look elsewhere.

What was Villa's deal with Citeh? Was Milner 26 mill + Ireland? or was it 26 mill minus their valuation of Ireland?

Somehow I don't think Bruce would go for him.

Agreed.

What a squad we'd have if Bentley, Ireland, N'Zogbia and a left back were added to it.

Whether he would do much better than either is the thing. He's at his best as a CM/CAM, and in a perfect world if you had a choice between buying him for the wing or a an actual winger or midfielder on the flanks I'd rather go for the latter. If he was cheap though it might be worth a pop.

No doubt he'd be a considerable improvement in CM over what we have, but Bruce seems to want Hendo in the middle rather than the right. That would be a great pairing though, if they switched round, they would work well off each other.

Dempsey is a better version of Ireland though, I think, and more versatile across the middle, he would be a fantastic addition, and doable if offered a substantial package. Don't see either happening though.
