INVITATION TO ALL SUNDERLAND FANS

Introduction:

A few years ago a couple of mackems visited my local club, Telstar ( dutch first division ). They fell in love with our club right away. Mainly because of the wooden west-stand, but Amsterdam being 30 minutes away and right to use hard liquor and weed in the ground might have contributed aswell. Since that time we have visited eachothers club a few times and some top-class sunderland flags can be seen hanging at home andaway matches of our club.

Because of my great love for all that is Telstar or SAFC, I would like to send out an invitation to all Mackems to come and visit my local club, Telstar. I would be honoured and full of pride to show you around and tell you about our club during your visit. I can also simply f**k off if you heart enough

I am planning to get together a website with all the info needed for a trip to my club, but for now i will place all of this info in this message.

If you have any interest, big or small, please email me at: [email protected] Or PM me. You are free to ask anything.

The Ground:

The ground is one of the oldest in Holland. Where most clubs have moved to high-profile grounds, Telstar are still in the same place as in 1963. Only the East Stand, long end, has been renovated. The West stand is a wooden stand and full of nostalgia. Behind the goals are terraces, which are no longer used after FA regulations. In the ground is a fan home, where the fans gather before and after the match. Hard liquor is served. Also there is a player's home and a sponsor's home, all very ancient.

The Club - Telstar:
official site (non-english) : http://www.sctelstar.nl/
my fansite (some english) : http://telstar.startkabel.nl/

Our club was founded in 1963 after a merge of our two local club, big rivals of eachother. Because at that time the Satellite Telstar had just been shot into space and it would bring the nemies russia and USA together, they decided to ame the club Telstar ( to unite the 2 rivals ) and pick a satellite as club logo. ( http://www.interaddict.nl/upload/h7ikhz2j1i1hk2j-weirdinside.nl-slash-upload.jpg

They started in the first division, but already after one year they prmoted to the premier league. They stayed their till 1978 and their best ever season was the sixth place. Also they once beat the national team of Poland in a friendly. After the relegation in '78 it all went backwards for the club. We never got promoted after '78 and luckily there is no way to get relegated even further in Holland. Since '79 their were a few small successes like making the playoffs and the semis of the cup. We have the smallest budget in dutch football. The last few years we have a lot of good youth players coming through and with that comes success. We made the playoffs two years ago and last year we made the quarter finals of the cup.

Unfortunately, a year ago our board decided to merge with an amateur club because we needed their assets to survive. With this came an change in logo and name. We are now called Stormvogels/Telstar and they have raped our badge, which now carries a bird instead of the beloved satellite. This is still a big issue here in town and lot of people want it to be turned back again.

This season we have Baki Mercimek on loan from Sunderland AFC. Which off course makes the dutch mackems among us sooo proud. He really does a good job and we hope for him Wilko will give him a good chance next season.

The Town - Velsen/IJmuiden:

IJmuiden/Velsen is located at the coast of the North Sea and is ferry-connected with Newcastle bij ferry-company DFDS. The town is known for it's fishing industry and for Corus, the steel giant. Trains, busses or a ferry bring you to Amsterdam Central Station within 40 minutes.

Travel:

DFDS Seaways does a brilliant service from Newcastle to our Town. You go aboard beginning of the night, you can spent all night in the pub on board and then do a bit of sleeping and you arrive next morning at 9:00 in our harbour.

Otherwise you can just do the normal routine for getting to amsterdam and then travel by ferry, bus or train to our town. Staying in Amsterdam and coming over just for the game is a good possibility. If you would like to stay in IJmuiden/Velsen I will tell you some thing on that in the next bit.

Accomodation:

A few hotels in town. Prices are fairly cheap for british standards.

At the boulevard, only a few steps from the lovely beach, the Holiday Inn:

In the harbour area, a very classy hotel, but not pricy, The Augusta Hotel:

A sort of Motel, near the highway, The Bastion Hotel:

All hotels are not on walking distance from the ground, but busses are around plenty.

Drinking / Eating:

If you looking for a good drink, I can give you directions to a few pubs near the ground. Hell, I'll probably join you. As the ground is not in town centre, a lot of pubs or restaurants are a bit far to walk.

Some possibilities to have a bite near the ground, most fish restaurants will be found near the harbour, not in walking distance, but plenty of busses around.

Match Programma:

Now this is the big bugger! We used to play on saturdaynights, which was very handy to visit when coming from england. But TV forced us to play on fridaynights now, so that brings a few problems for employed. A few exceptions, some games are played on a sunday, also not very handy.
