Invest in Africa

I'm in Africa and can confirm that pretty much nobody here gives a fuck about Sunderland, so I'm sure it could improve our profile considerably. Unfortunately, everyone's so poor that I can't see how it could increase our revenue much?! Lets face it, having the word Africa across our shirt is not going to compete with teams with African stars winning Champions Leagues for other teams. If anything, it'll probably just lead to a few fake Sunderland shirts being flogged in dodgy markets.

Not true, where in Africa BTW? We are quite a well respected team here.
Few local supporters here, probably as many as the Mags as of around Jan.

I'm in South Africa, not met a single Sunderland fan! The black guys all seem to support Chelsea, Arsenal, Man Utd or Liverpool and the white people support Man Utd or Liverpool. Most who are in to football know who we are, but that's about it. Where are you?

My dad lives in jo'burg and i lived there for twenty odd years ...we were the only SAFC supporters i knew ..ha ;)

You watch MNF on SS pal?! I have heard two Sunderland supporters with SA accents and all phone in. 1 HAMMER, 1 VILLIAN, NO MAGS.
We also have Malaysian fans can you believe. ( phoned in on the 24/7 prem channel)

We are very well known in SA and the blacks respect the hell out of us.
Have you noticed Liverpool support is dropping here fast.

I also get stopped a lot when I where my SAFC top.

The hiracy here is Man U Chelsea or Arsenal then Liverpool(supporters heading to City and Spurs) City, Spurs and the the rest of the teams.

If it's true that our new sponsor is a multi million pound African based oil corporation then i'm disgusted.

Totally immoral.

If you said Man City here a few years ago people would think you are talking about Man U.

Edit: Also saw an Indian bloke wearing a SAFC top in Bedford Center a while ago...harassed him a bit.

I'm in JHB too, never worn my Sunderland shirt out and about though! Maybe I'm just talking to the wrong people?! I've only been here 6 weeks though, so mybe too early to judge.

Where abouts in JHB are you?! This is probably a stupid question, but I don't suppose there are enough SAFC fans about to organise watching the matches in a pub somewhere?!

In Sunninghill, Sandton

We watch games(assorted) at the bowls club or the Keg on Riviona.

Man U supporters here out number teams like Everton, Villa, Mags, West ham Sunderland combined around 20 000/1 but Terry Paine and Gary Bailey still bang on about how massive we and these teams are in the UK on MNF.
But only real support for the top 4.

'Glory support' follows the same pattern abroad as is does in England then.

That's a bad thing? If, as one assumes, some of that will be redirected to a journey that leads to the coffers of Sunderland AFC, then surely that can only encourage any glimmer of hope that we will be able to invest that in both on and off pitch 'growth' activities seen on similar level to the better clubs. If we can do that then surely we have a chance of perhaps not just strengthening but boosting our place in the PL.

Who out of interest? As I know you consider everyone better than us.

Teams like Spurs certainly is a perfect club to emulate and to aspire to becoming of a similar size in financial clout to.

But I see no reason why we can't follow in Everton's financial footsteps since they seem to be able to do very well to stay in a healthy position in the PL.

Aston Villa is another of the few teams who can boast an uninterrupted tenure competing in the PL and finishing in a top 10 position almost regularly as in the 20 seasons of the PL since the 1992-3 season began they have only finished outside of the top 10 five times and doing it with some famous names in the history of the PL like Darius Vassell, Dion Dublin, George Boateng and Juan Pablo Angel (who btw scored 66 goals in 205 appearances). If we can form for us now a carbon copy of their history then I see no reason why we can't be mentioned in the same breath as Aston Villa.

Everton would be the one. Not in terms of finances obviously as they're skint, but they certainly have a decent enough profile to get some good players. Plus they're academy seems fairly fruitful, I think that's one area we seem to be gaining in.

Spurs. Would love to be able to buy a player of Krancjar's quality for peanuts then ask for £12m to sell him a year later, despite not playing. So again, it's a yes from me.

I just hate villa for the usual fickle sad reasons

All in all. V. Good post. Have you been lobotomised???

No. Though I did have a strange dream last night where we had I think a game against Bolton on the evening and I left the house but came back for some reason to get something. The next scene I was in the Sports Bar but it was nothing like the Sports Bar as it really is. I remember having one of those wind-up radios with me I think and a kid next to me had a DS Lite but he lost his stylus. I also seem to remember a raised bed (the sort for plants) in it. That's all I can remember.

I just have the same ambitions and hopes as you. And everyone else for that matter.

And isn't the Invest In Africa charity the work of Tullow Oil? SO surely any sponsorship deal would be funded by them, regardless which logo goes on the shirt. Tullow Oil at home, Invest In Africa on the away kit?

I would imagine this to be true. Im sure from reading various articles that it sounds like something started by Tullow Oil to help people invest in a market where they are the leaders. This is where they will need groups like us outside of Africa working in a market that is globally broadcast. Anything involving sponsorship of Invest In Africa will be fronted in finance by Tullow and they are doing very well apparently so I would imagine the deal to be a lot more rewarding than past deals.

That Tullow Oil logo has to be the worst designed logo there is...crude and immature, we'd look like wazocks.

Its not like. Well designed logo. Immediately recognisable.

Agree with this, logo, design and marketing for the company seem very slick. Was having a look through there website last night and it's very well presented too - canny interesting read re how the company started too.

Quite a lot of SAFC fans out in Ghana too. The Gyan craic was huge news over there.
