There’s a prevailing trend on that map whereby the US government have been involved in conflict in areas of destabilised government and attractive oil reserves.
Security of energy is a high priority to them.
Yes it was quite a surprise when I saw it, it makes a lot of sense when you see the map just how screwed up the world is because of oil.

I got that gig, never got the £80 mind.
They were an excellent band. Saw them at the Argus Butterfly, Peterlee around 1969. They were trying to be Cream, who had just broken up; so a three-piece with a bassist/singer. Hard rock or Blues rock would probably describe it.
In December '68 I booked Mick Taylor's band The Gods to play Peterlee Tech's Xmas party at Durham Town Hall. They were about £80 too. Six months later he was a Rolling Stone.
