Its usually caused by "mixed content".

RTG is a "secure" site (ie. https not http) which means that all communications between your browser and the RTG server are encrypted.

When someone links to a picture which is posted on an "insecure" website, some browsers will not display the "insecure" content.

The browser does actually download the image and cache it, just doesn't display it. So when you reply it will often display the image (as this page is then being created by you to send back to the RTG servers).

More and more sites are using "secure" protocols, (i.e image is also from https site) which means the problem should diminish over time, but meanwhile you will find some browsers will display them and others won't.
