Imagine van aanholt in the champs league? It could happen

Always a fan of his. Added a lot more to the team than he detracted from it......

Look at the f***ing state of us now man, we can't sign a player from Peterborough

This.

Mental that he got so much stick. He was guilty of poor positioning at times, but rarely made glaring errors, he scored key goals, assisted, carried possession into the opposition 3rd and generally did everything you'd expect from an attacking full back. Whisper it, he was almost an exciting Sunderland player in an era of relative dirge.

Sold at a profit too.

What's people's problem?

A couple of years back he was pretty much culpable for the majority of the goals we conceded during one of our many barren spells.

Guaranteed to concede when ball with the oppos left winger. Cross to back post for a tap in whilst pva is picking his arse on the edge of the box.

Truly awful defender and thats what he was first and foremost employed to do.

People moaned about him for so long when he’s a good player ffs. 100000 x better than Oviedo the useless arse

thats like saying pol pot wasnt as bad as hitler because he didnt kill as many people. Shit is shit and both are shit

PVA was a sign of the scape goat mentality some have on here.

He was one of our most effective attacking options in his time at the SoL. He was a wing back with a preference for attack.

It was not his fault that we played him as a straight full back which he never was. In the right team, he’ll be a excellent player so this move would not surprise me

You don’t have a clue marra

If it happens then with rose, van aanholt and whatshisname now at Chelsea three ex Safc left backs at top level teams

He might be doing very well now but I don't know why everyone's revising their memories of his time here.

He was slated so often on here because he kept being directly responsible for us conceding goals. Not even talking about not tracking back, it's that he used to turn his back on the winger and dodge their cross again and again and again and again and again and again and again. PVA was pretty much our best attacking player bar Defoe, but since we conceded pretty much every time the opposition got to his byline, it barely mattered.

Do people think 40 000 were perfectly capable of spotting Rose was a good LB, but that 30 000 of the same people were somehow completely wrong about PVA for the best part of a year? Of course not. He kept being slated because he was shite, before a brief solid period under Allardyce.

Spot on

Can only assume he's got better since he left. He really was f***ing terrible for the PL level. £14m will always be a good deal for him at the time.

For me he became a bit of a scapegoat for everything that was going wrong across the whole team.

Yeah I agree and the whole ‘he can’t defend’ came from a period where he was our main attacking / goal threat so was needed to be in the final third and no one covered him and he had no one supporting him at all. In the short period he had a genuine left sided midfielder in front of him they worked great and coincidentally one of the best periods in recent times under big Sam.

Shite shite shite defender.

Would do well in a top team, until folk started noticing his laziness and the amount of his final passes that go astray.
