can answer this- because he didnt play for us
Ashurst dropped him for the Milk Cup Final, after he had scored against Chelsea in the Semi/finals and playing and scoring against Norwich the weekend before.
And don’t you wish Elliott was fit that day
Elliott was suspended after getting booked against Chelsea in the Semi/Final. He wasn't injured

Denis Smith - (up there with my favourite SAFC gaffers Reid, Allardyce & Neil)
Do you regret selling your best mate Viv Busby up the river, only to be sacked yourself a few months later?

But as I love Denis Smith and wouldn't want to embarrass him with such an awkward question. So.....

Denis Smith - money was tight in 1990, but given the chance, do you think if you'd been allowed the budget to keep Gates & MacPhail as squad players, we'd have survived that season in the 1st division (Premier League for young'uns) & history could have been very different?
Macphail started the first game, I don’t think his subsequent departure was about budget. Gates would have still contributed something and could well have made the difference.

I think MacPhail only stated the 1st out of sentiment so he could say he'd played in the top flight.
Keeping both would have made a difference IMHO. When you look at the squad we had that season it was tiny. Got to have been limited budget.
