If we go up this season we should be aiming for top 6 in championship next season

Consolidation is bollocks mind, it’s just something people say because they dont think anything higher is acheiveable at the current moment.

Sunderland, whilst in the Championship, should always be playing to get out of it.

It’s easier said than done, but you dont just aim to sit in the middle of the table for a club of our size.
Exactly right.

No harm in having high expectations as long as are smart about it.

Pretty sure Norwich, Leicester, Sheffield United, Wolves and even Huddersfield went quickly through the Championship and into the prem after promotion from L1.

Sunday showed the rest of Britain that we're back. It was our best result at Wembley for 48 years and an amazing win (credit to Tranmere for trying). We really should be allowed to defend our Trophy with the first team and not the Under 23's (Wouldn't they be finishing too low to get an invite anyway?). If we all got together and petitioned Papa John's and the FA, surely they'd have to give it fair consideration. After all, winners of the Champion's League are allowed back in, even if they are not in a qualifying home league position. We must have a good case on this. We can't just cave in and let someone else steal our trophy in an unjust way, especially as we'd have a superb chance at retaining it.
Not if we don't get promoted we're not.

Even in the Championship we wouldn't be "back" FFS. The mood's lifted and the new ownership might hopefully just be the start of something, but there's a hell of a long way to go before "We're Back".

You're been silly. I for one hope Sunday was the last time we ever have to play in that competition ever.

Does it not favour us that most of the clubs are up to the eyes in debt ?
I work in the same building as a Sports Analysis company (who work for Liverpool, Leeds etc, top Spanish clubs and Marseille interestingly) and one of the lads is often saying how that despite the debt they build up, not many clubs in Championship learn their lessons and will continue to throw money at it and gamble it all.. Its madness.

Bang on.

People go on about the championship now as if it’s this fantastic league where you have to spend hundreds of millions to get out of it but look at Barnsley winning every week now. If they can do it no reason why we can’t if we try and get 5/6 good players in . Maybe 2/3 premiership loans and 2/3 permanent signings

Calm down dear... getting way ahead of yourself there.

It'll be a big step up IF we do get promoted this year. We're on a good run but there will be difficult times ahead of us aswell, we'll need to remain patient.

Too early to say. I reckon before we look at that we should get promoted first

Not at all, but I'm under no illusion that the rest of Britain could give a toss, if they were even aware. We should hope our first team never plays in that competition again.
Absolutely this. I was having a text conversation with one of my best mates on Saturday night and he hadn’t even realised we were playing in it - he thought the Portsmouth/Salford match was this year’s final.

Our game clashed with Leicester v Sheffield United and the North London derby - anyone not interested in Sunderland would be watching those games.

Of course we should be aiming for promotion.

But I doubt it is realistic first season up.

These days we are very much a league one team full of players bought with league one in mind.

It's not like we really have any remnants of being in the premier league left.

It will take a total rebuild of the side to be promotion contenders.

Even if KLD is prepared to splash his cash in a major way, there is a limit to what FFP allows.

It's one reason why on the one hand I'm rooting for Newcastle to be relegated, on the other I'm dreading it. A team built to play in the premier league against a team built to play in league one, I'd kind of like us to have another season to strengthen first 🤣

I'd be content with comfortably staying up in the first season then kicking on the season after that. Need a longterm plan to improve the squad year on year.

Incorrect.

Running before we can walk. Get up and make sure we're steady in the division for the first season. 12-18th will do.
That would be failure and the manager would be sacked deservedly so
We are nowhere near that part yet tho. There’s a hell of a lot of football to play. If we do go up we need to assemble a full new squad. Big ask, no harm in having high expectations tho, Sheff UTD Southampton have done it

There are maybe 3 players from Sunday that are worth giving a go in the Championship.

I dunno the big sides are paying less and less attention to the cups owt could happen .

Really?

Including 2021, only one of the last 10 league cup finals will have been won by a club outside the "Big 6"(Swansea); and in the 30 years since Spurs won the FA Cup, only Pompey, Wigan and Everton have won it from outside the 6 usual suspects.

We'd need a lot more than that but whatever business we do should be with the intention of going up again.
To be fair I'd not really be bothered if we never went back in the prem . Fair win percentage , good footy , full houses , sound financial footing, local young uns coming through , maybe win a decent cup . Would all do me in the championship rather than struggle in the prem ... of course if KLD is going to do it in style and go full on big time that's different .
 Dream on.

What an absurd way of thinking.

To stay in the Championship for any prolonged length of time would be to ultimately fail in the Championship. That fair win percentage would probably have to be quite crap so as not to bother the promotion spots.

Good football? I'm not sure about that. Better than what we have now, but it's still not great. And again, you'd have to be crap to stay down in the division.

Full Houses? In The Championship? Not for very long mara.

Sound financial footing? Questionable - plenty of clubs in bother in that league. Ultimately you need the Premier League payday at some point.

Local Young uns? Talent will be eaten up by the Premier League. No two ways about it.

Win a Cup? 1973 was a long time ago. And so was 1980.

Two dozen players and half a dozen coaches graft every day to prepare to try and win matches in order to clinch promotion.

Little do they realise that in spite of their efforts their success is determined by whether posters on here start off a jinx thread, wear their lucky socks or drive a particular route to the match.

Back in the early 70s my mate and I would listen to Radio Durham on a Saturday afternoon when the lads were playing away. There was no commentary just updates from the ground every few minutes or if a goal was scored.

We reckoned if we could both hold our breath for a minute the lads would score. I don’t think we ever managed a minute without bursting into laughter. Our excuse for being so daft is we were young kids and did grow out of it.

Many on here still think tomorrow night’s result could be affected by whether they put a bet on the result or mention that an opposing forward hasn’t scored for a while.😳
😆 true. but equally the players and coaches grafting away and fresh off winning at Wembley are already reading threads determining which of them can be ditched on the chance we get promoted. Also the constant listing of “easy fixtures” and the “we are going to smash [insert team name] today never seems to come to fruition.
How often do we batter anyone ? There wasn’t much between ourselves and Tranmere on Sunday.

You cannot instantly buy your way into the top. It would be crazy to even try.
I would personally go for the Brentford model. Healthy business and well considered investments all the way.
What do you actually know about "the Brentford model"?

They've signed the best part of 60 players over the last 3 seasons.

One foot in front of the other. It’s this kind of expectation on hard targets we need to be removing. As long as the club are improving day by day then it’s a step in the right direction. Short term goals by winning the next game is how Speakman/Johnson see it and I agree with them.
