If we go up this season we should be aiming for top 6 in championship next season

Yes we should be.

Not for me, they’ve been in the championship for yonks. They’re a small club that have devised a model that suits them, something somewhere in the middle perhaps.
Brentford have a healthy business model, that is extremely important in my opinion.
I'd take that over spending millions to replace a whole team for succes and high risk of having to take big losses if things don't turn out well.

There’s a massive difference between the Championship and league one as we’re finding out, I think survival is the name of the game in the first season then hopefully progress from there. I’m not saying a top 6 finish is impossible in that first season but it’s highly unlikely, the 3 teams that come down from the Premier League start with a great financial advantage.

Consolidation is bollocks mind, it’s just something people say because they dont think anything higher is acheiveable at the current moment.

Sunderland, whilst in the Championship, should always be playing to get out of it.

It’s easier said than done, but you dont just aim to sit in the middle of the table for a club of our size.

Ya not wrong. New owner doesn't spend 3 billion if promoted there'll be hell on.

IF we go up, 2 or 3 seasons of gradual improvement would do me before mounting a meaningful challenge.
Easier said than done mind.
To be fair I'd not really be bothered if we never went back in the prem . Fair win percentage , good footy , full houses , sound financial footing, local young uns coming through , maybe win a decent cup . Would all do me in the championship rather than struggle in the prem ... of course if KLD is going to do it in style and go full on big time that's different .

Can you imagine the whingeing on here if we were between 12th and 18th all season? I’ve seen us occupying those positions and usually the performances were dire, ie most of the period from 91-95.

The game is all about money now, throwing lots of money at it doesn’t guarantee success but it sure does go a long way toward it. Your new owner seems to have instilled a feel good factor around your club and I’m sure that if you do go up he won’t be happy just to settle for mediocrity, could be exciting times ahead.

The thing you need to do, to be successful in the way we are at the moment, is get the back room staff right, you need to recruit the right people, to recruit the right people, to recruit the right players, they also need to recruit the people who are in charge of improving the players, you can spend millions on signing a squad full of good players, but without the right team working with them, they’ll go backwards. Get the scouting, coaching, medical/conditioning team right, and you stand a chance of progression, get it wrong and you’ve no chance.

They’re far more important than the players themselves, we sell players in every transfer window, but it’s not a problem because we’ve got a good team in place to replace them, and improve their replacements to a standard were we are improving on the pitch, before selling them on for profit to reinvest. It’s not happened overnight and we’ve had plenty of luck, but we’ve made some of that luck ourselves by having put in solid foundations on which to build.

There's no chance of winning a cup in the championship though...

People go on about the championship now as if it’s this fantastic league where you have to spend hundreds of millions to get out of it but look at Barnsley winning every week now. If they can do it no reason why we can’t if we try and get 5/6 good players in . Maybe 2/3 premiership loans and 2/3 permanent signings
The championship is a massive gulf to league 1 . It’s still not that likely we will even go up. If we did we’d need significant strengthening and a transfer window masterclass

I watched Sheff Wed v Norwich the other night, Weds are 2nd bottom and I have to say, if we were to face them now I wouldn’t bet on us winning.

That said I’m sure if we go up we won’t be starting the season with the same squad we have now.

Luton, Barnsley and Charlton all struggled at first. Coventry are having some difficulties, whilst Rotherham look like being releagted and Wycombe are all but done. The gap is has widened due to Championship squad players getting more money than they would to start in L1 or L2. We would definitely need to throw some cash at it to be comfortable.
