If there were nicknames here for towns and cities like they have in America

Why is London called the smoke? Greenest city in the world and doesn't have the heavy industry of other cities.
You are obviously as thick as whale spunk?

Through the 19th and in the early half of the 20th century, Londoners used coal for heating their homes, which produced large amounts of smoke. In combination with climatic conditions this often caused a characteristic smog, and London became known for its typical "London Fog", also known as "Pea Soupers".

It was very smoky back in the day, look up how many died in the smog in the 50s.
I was there mate, it was disgusting, but I've also lived up north and had to breathe some foul air at times. Steam trains were horrendous like, used to put my hand over my mouth as the train came into the station.
