Ice hockey in Asia

Turns out this is a thing after all. And not just while the IOC wants to stage Winter Olympics in places like Korea and China. Was in Barcelona recently at an Olympic qualifying tournament and caught up with the national team from Chinese Taipei (better known as Taiwan, but that's politically complicated). Turns out there's even a grassroots Asian hockey out there - and enjoying its best ever results.

Decent hockey on freesport today . Panthers v steelers , then Spengler cup final from Davos.

Remember talking to some lads over a beer in Toronto many years ago. They were moaning like hell about the likes of LA and Tampa having NHL teams.
Ice rinks and palm trees....ridiculous!
Wonder what they would make of it all now ??

A better link here (didn't know I couldn't use shortened links on this site!): Where ‘better than Mexico’ is an ice hockey triumph

Before playing in the tournament I saw in Barcelona, Chinese Taipei won a qualifying group on Hainan in the South China Sea. Officially tropical hockey!

To be honest, having watched a lot of hockey in all sorts of places, I enjoy games like this so much more than the top level stuff. It just feels like people are happier to be a part of it (probably because they don't have their entire country breathing down their necks demanding gold). Had a fantastic time in Chile a few years ago, at probably the lowest level international tournament I've seen: For the love of the game on the edge of the world
