he hopes to retain his position in the ODI side at three, instead of root and moeen. he then states they have bowling to fall back on but bell thinks his fielding, experience and average of 40 should see him as a first pick.

now though, i think, we can all appreciate his style of batting, he has imo, continually flattered to deceive at ODI level and if england start with him, we will be home after the group stage

averages are old news in ODIS its all about strike rate.

bell should play tests only at this stage

Bell a better ODI batsman than Cook IMO,agree all about strike rate but think he deserves to be in the side ahead of Cook, don't know their strike rates of hand, but think Bell quicker scorer than Cook.

IMO Cook is the one who should only play tests

Pretty sure Bell doesn't have an average as high as 40 in ODI. His SR is actually worse than Cook's which is poor for a supposed pinch hitter.

All about opinions mate, just think Bell has more array of shots than Cook and can up the pace when required, don't feel Cook has that in his locker.

he does not, its 37 but he is quoted as saying 40 as a reason for selection at three in front of root or moeen

cooks average is also 37 strike rate of 78. bells average is 37 strike rate of 76

imo not good enough for modern odi rate of scoring where at least 300 is needed to have a good chance of winning the world cup

this of course, leads to hales, morgan, bopara, buttler having to score at around 125 to 150 strike rate, immediately on getting to the crease

Add to that, Moeen averaging 37 with a SR of 96 from his ODIs thus far.

Isn't the plan in the modern game just to preserve wickets whilst keeping the score ticking over at about 5 an over which is both Bell and Cook' s forte then in the last 20 overs have wickets in hand and score at a T20 rate to get to 300+

You just walked down the time tunnel from 1990?

for england yes, however auastralia open with warner and finch, could you see more of a difference than potentially cook and bell?

Gilchrist opened the batting for the ODI team from 1999!

Pinch hitters are not a new innovation! In fact they are a necessity with the advent of batting power play.
we just need more 100 strike rate players in the top four, then buttler, bopara and morgan, can up the pace

england bat test match style for 30 overs, then try to up it to t20 pace. this is why we are usually at 120 for 1 or so after 30 overs and the pressure is on the middle lads to bat at 150 strike rate. not easy to achieve with top clkass international bowlers

Don't think so mate all about scoring in the first 15 overs when ball hard and fielding restrictions in play IMO

About 20 years ago in the World Cup quarter final,Sri Lanka destroyed us in the first 15 overs and everyone else to that matter going on to win the World Cup that year, hence showing a new brand of how to play one day cricket.

Yet will still taking about steady starts and preserving wickets.
