STEVE BRUCE would “love” to extend his Sunderland tenure – and be handed the chance to “build something” at the Stadium of Light, writes STEVE BROWN.
The 49-year-old signed a three-year contract to become Black Cats boss in June 2009.
His stock is in the ascendancy at present, with the Wearside outfit riding high in the Premier League after just three defeats in 15 games this season.
However, having having hit rock bottom with the Tyne-Wear derby loss only three weeks ago, Bruce is all too aware how quickly fortunes can change in football management.

So, while he is keen to extend his stay at Sunderland, he has stressed the ball remains firmly in the club’s court.
He said: “I have 18 months left and with anything like this it is up to the club, certainly I will not pre-empt anything.
“I think it is up to the people who employ you to come and ask.
“I have never ever in my life asked, I have always been approached.
“If they make the approach I would love to stay. I have said that many a time, but until they do we will see.
“If the club come to me . . . I suppose probably the summer is the right time.
“If I am asking Jordan Henderson to commit himself to the club, then like any player you try to sign I would have thought the first thing they are going to ask is ‘Well what is your future?’.
“So we will sit down, and I am sure if it is right then we will do something about it.”
Bruce added: “I never take anything for granted any more because football has changed in terms of longevity.
“You just have to look at the average, which now is something like 16 months for any manager. I am not going to take anything for granted.
“I would love to stay here, I would love to build something, but you have to take one week at a time and be realistic about it and then be judged on that.
“However, if they come to me, then we will see.”
Meanwhile, Bruce has agreed to extend Andy Reid’s initial month-long loan spell at Sheffield United.
He said: “Andy needs games, so I think the most sensible thing to do is to let him get some games under his belt and see where we are in six weeks time.
“I would expect him to extend his loan. If Gary (Speed, Blades boss) wants him then he can stay there.”

we already been beaten by Everton then?

As for Bruce, wait and see where we finish this season personally.

Id give him the 7 years Reidy had and see where it takes us.

Agreed the club needs stability and you get this by giving your better staff longer contracts. His work has really only begun this season after clearing the decks of the dross

As long as we don't do what we did with Reid and give him time when it's very obvious his time was up. During his 6th season when we finished 4th bottom the writing had been on the wall for a while that his powers to motivate the team were waning.......we should have thanked him for his (up till then) good work and brought in a new man who would have had the £10m to invest in his own men.

Well you have now Brucie son

Agree with this.

He should be rewarded with contract extensions nearer the end of his current contract if we have progressed, tying anyone down to a long term contract is pointless as the managers walk when they want to, and if you sack them you have to pay them compensation

Steady on Brucey son, let's get to the end of the season and evaluate first eh?

Last season started in a similar manner to this and all went tits up around this time and the failure to beat the lower half teams still needs addressing.

I like Bruce ands think he has been good for the club however this sounds like he is touting for a new contract with 18 months of this one left. I say we leave it another year and see what he has achieved in that time.

2 weeks ago he was on about people wanting him out. Why would you give him a contract based on 1 result, need to leave it and look at it later, the overall performances so far this season doesn't really warrant it.

 despite the fact we'd go joint 4th if we win tomorrow night
