on sky, cricket mags etc etc

i expect this to be proven wrong of course. apparently sky think that at 4/1 for relegation is one of the best bets for 2013

there appears a lot of pundits expecting surrey with ponting and smith, to win the championship

will they?

Did they notice any results at the end of last season?

Did they think about the likely state of pitches now? Admittedly they are drying out fast at the moment I guess

The Durham pitch is very soft at the minute - hence Harmison wont be playing for at least a month - and the club has been thinking about bring in industrial dryers to dry the wicket out. We have a results pitch anyway but it could be a very low scoring game v Somerset.

There's a huge industrial dryer blowing from the east at the moment, and no rain forecast

I'm not surprised TBH they all reckon we'll go down.

They've seen the stories about us not having any money and other problems we've had so they just base their assumptions on that.

On paper they have a point but cricket is played on grass, not paper so let's hope we prove 'em all wrong.

We need some good weather and some blowy stuff to get the pitches in good shape, especially for the local season which starts in a couple of weeks.

Yes, lazy assumptionism

Hopefully it bonds the team together, but there's no hardship anyway...it's not as if they are being refused wages

The batting looks weak, you can't escape that, but we won 2 titles with an average batting line up

I have been saying for ages that we need to be concerned about relegation. BUT, I think the majority of responses on here have covered my thoughts that its just lazy journalism and misguided or ill-informed assumptions.

The inexperience in our side is the main worry on the face of it but from me I see it as a massive positive and I'm excited to see the kids get a proper go. I'm torn between Geoff's Juniors and Cookie's Kids as a nickname for the lads :-). It's not quite Busby Babes but its a start! Anyone got any better solutions?!

As for the pundits Surrey claims - I put that down to typical southern bias. They finished 7th last year FFS and they've only really added Smith who is of any note. Most of their better players will be on International Duty for the bulk of the summer

Is Ponting not of note?! Seems to be batting well.

I like Richardson and Jennings must massive question marks remain over the likes of Stoneman, Smith & Muchall.

Do you think the first two would be in Geoff Cook's first choice side?

Quite proud of that...... Seeing how most of the cricket media will now be on the dole - I might send my CV around a few of the broadsheets :-)
