I have seen some stupid tactical decisions in my life

They looked as drained as our lads against Coventry. The PSG game midweek just floored them both for the energy it took out of them and the outcome.

Newcastle, like Coventry against us, looked fitter, stronger and more motivated.

I can’t believe Liverpools players weren’t motivated for a cup final but I can believe they were knackered and unable to match the energy Newcastle brought to the game.

He's not there to win the header, he's there to block the run. The taller defenders are sat deeper to enable them to spot an attacking a run and gain a leap in order to defend a ball played into the edge of the six yard box. Almost every side playing professional football does the same. In general it works, not many corners lead to goals.
Except he made no attempt, was behind the man he was supposed to block and made no attempt to track the run.

It happened several times

It was obvious it wasn’t working though, he looked a massive threat at every corner and mccalister barely blocked him once. It was insane someone else wasn’t put on him he was the main threat but that was down to someone four foot smaller and ten clem lighter was put on him to block him😂😂😂
Because Mcallister makes no contact with him whatsoever, he totally gave him a free run. So then when tripier hits the perfect ball that the free centre half’s can’t defend it then becomes a huge problem. We were doing it at Coventry for example, Rigg was up against Wright.

It’s tactical over thinking gone nuts. In what world can a ten stone five footer block a six foot plus 14-15 stone bloke? It’s mental.

But inevitably the ball goes in there to be competed for so blocking (or restricting) a run to attack a ball does not make that much of a difference to a dominant player attacking an aerial ball. Then there is the question of when it becomes an infringement, the lad "picking up" the scorer wasn't even looking at the ball.

Thought todays game was very similar to yesterdays shit show .
Liverpool and Sunderland both supposedly superior to the opposition but both outplayed , outfought and outclassed on the day . Both seemed to be totally out of sorts , both couldn’t string a pass together or create a decent opportunity and both looked to be running on empty.
The more worrying thing about Saturday wasn't the lack of goals, the hat-trick or the bad defeat. It was that we could probably still sleepwalk ourselves into the play-offs where we will get mullered by Coventry (again!)

Ain’t watched much footy in the last couple of years, but Liverpool were shocking, looked like they ‘wanted’ to lose almost
I've never seen a team go through the motions in a cup final like that before. It was only the substitutes who showed any desire - it was an absolute shocker from Arne Slot.

They know he isn’t going to totally block him man. They just went a bit checking and contact so that he isn’t running like a steam train to head a ball from about 12 yards like yesterday. They are leaving their best headers free round the 6 year box to attack it . So Newcastle after hit their corners out of those areas so vvd etc can’t win it and then really if a burn wins it that far out it shouldn’t be a totally clean header. But when someone switches off and does not even look at burn it looks awful just like zonal looks awful when the attacking team scores as they look totally free.

but nothing compared to assigning the smallest player in the team (5ft 9in) to mark the tallest in the opposition (6ft 7in) at set pieces.
Congratulations Mr Slot

Tactically atrocious. I’m still trying to work out what the thinking was there? It was obvious what Newcastle were trying to do from set pieces and Liverpool just didn’t seem capable of identifying it and stopping it/interested.

Normally when a team is as bad as Liverpool were you can usually say the opposition helped contribute towards them having to play a certain way but they never looked bothered. Salah didn’t want to know and they were happy to play head tennis for the most part. You at least expect your team to have a go in a final ffs - one of their fans had a PSG hat on so says it all really
