How racist were we ? (In the 70s)

Remember the whole ground singing 'I'd rather be a Paki than a mag' at the SOL in the 00's, also remember 'your just a town full of Paki's' at Bradford away in the 90's.

Not so much recently, saying that last week when Wes Morgan was chasing down PVA last week the bloke in the SWC was venting and you could clearly tell he was desperate to call him a black bastard but took all his will power to refrain. Funny as owt.

Bloke behind me at the Derby a few year back called demba BA a black bastard.

Realised what he said and apologised and claimed it was a slip of the tounge

Its grammatically correct to say "only" as in I have 7 apples but only 3 oranges. it infers nothing except i have fewer oranges than apples.
Who the fuck's counting? Or gives a shit?
...and it's "implies" not "infers"; the writer implies, the reader infers.

Cole definitely wasn't racially abused en masse during that game though. Abused for being a Mag.

Remember Emerson getting it bad for Boro the last Roker season. And 'I'd rather be a **** than a Mag' getting sung in pubs pre-match before Reid came.

In terms of modern day it still seems fine to abuse McClean for being catholic on the grounds he's a cock.

He gets abuse for being a cock not a Catholic.

Half of the racism in the 70s was probably trying to put the black players off. We knew they were good (except ours!) We had a weakness against their pace (racist I know)

Half I said, before anyone shoots this down

Probably made many of them play better

A few black former players were discussing racism on 5live recently, and while they said the London clubs were the worst, we also got a mention as being bad

Were we particularly bad?

I started in the 80s and everyone still called Gary Bennett midnight

We were . But we still had racist pricks following is play off season- remember having bother with some of our lot down Ipswich when group of lads were giving the monkey chants to their centre forward. Told them to pack it in and ended up having a bit of a barney. Stewards intervened and wanted to chuck me and my mate out instead of the 10 or so bell ends shouting the abuse.

Remember years ago in one of McCarthy's early games, Jason Roberts came on for West Brom, some berk behind me shouts "f***ing hell, straight oot the jungle"

It was an absolute nightmare time for those footballers and ruined some of their careers.

Thank fuck we've progressed beyond recognition in a relatively short amount of time.

While we called our defender "midnight", they called their famous number 9 "Cooningham"

You won't find many mag websites reminiscing about those days.
They used to sing " there's only one coon at the toon" about Cunningham.

They love the famous number 9 there like

I've just read his wiki page and apparently his nickname at newcastle was "slug"

Erm, no it wasn't
Slug not exactly a positive

To be fair and whilst there were some unsavoury shouts and chants that went on in those days I don't think we are as bad as lots of other teams.

Still it's history and thankfully the world has moved on

You may have had a point if they'd replaced eating pies with eating bananas rather than throwing them on the pitch.

I can recall that incident too. We never got to that level
