How racist were we ? (In the 70s)

I was at filbert street in mid-late 90s and a lot of our fans were chanting it.

I am not condoning it but it was in response to the typical 'on the dole' and 'small town in Scotland' jibes that they dished out first.

I'm not saying it was bantz or funny or right but the fuckers went very quiet and stopped bombarding us with regionalist insults.

True but no harm in falling on our collective swords about how terrible we all were before the enlightenment.

Were it not for all of our errors then we would not all be living in the harmonious bliss we now enjoy, the good people of leicester and bradford now spend their time making daisy chains and stare at the clouds together, xxxx

Not always white's who make comments about colour. Some Indians make jokes of other Indians with darker skin.

And have a fixed system from birth you carry for your entire life, regardless of endeavour, honesty, or integrity.

Unfortunately the west has an inability to convey the truth, simply it is too busy demolishing what we are, which in general is very good, and has been hard won.

The correct way to type it (rather than speak, which he wasn't doing unless I've missed a cool new feature of this board) would be - "there were 8 black players and 3 white players" rather than saying "there were only 3 white players" which implies that 3 is not enough, which then infers that 8 black players is too much.

I really don't believe you are as thick as you seem. Stop looking for racism where there is none.

I remember seeing Orient winger John Chiedoze (sp?) getting pelted with a banana at Roker Park. We were as racist as any other club in those days. I think it improved a great deal once Gary Bennett arrived in the summer of '84 though.

Ironic that on a thread about how racist we were, where people are conveying the truth, you take issue with people conveying the truth

Of course other races have racists. It's got absolutely nothing to do with this thread though.

I remember as a kid in the Fulwell end, the masses were serenading an opposition black player with

He's a w@& a w@&, it's plain to see to see
He's blacker than you and me
He's a w@&, a w@&

There was a black fella stood just in front of us, he pulled his Parker hood over his head and said to his mate "nothing to do with me"

I remember thinking how horrible it most of been for him. Looking back, it's incredible how blatantly racist it was at football

Ironic that you are intolerant to my views on a thread about tolerance, irony.

That was really bad and happened all game.

Remember watching our game against Man Utd (fa cup replay) when Cole got the late winner. As he runs towards the dug out (and presume close to some pitch side mic) to celebrate you can hear clear as day "fuck off Cole, ya black ****".

Wasnt that long ago a good number of our lot sang a racist song about Ameobi.

Cole definitely wasn't racially abused en masse during that game though. Abused for being a Mag.

Remember Emerson getting it bad for Boro the last Roker season. And 'I'd rather be a **** than a Mag' getting sung in pubs pre-match before Reid came.

In terms of modern day it still seems fine to abuse McClean for being catholic on the grounds he's a cock.

Awful like. Given people abuse for anything they have no control over is just wrong. Skin colour, sexuality, disability etc

Anything else is fair game mind

I know he wasn't, just that incident stood out in my memory.

Emerson probably got it worse at the SOL. Was the game where there was absolute hell on after the game, with biro trying to run back into the ground (iirc the abuse and fighting was in their hoolie book).

I can't remember any racism from roker in the 90's and Sol Campbell's unchallenged claim actually pisses me off, I can't remember Bennett being called midnight but my dad did call him 'shiney' which he was with the sweat and floodlights on him.
Got to admit I was probably part of a few 'town full of p##i's' chantsback in the Reid era as i was just a youngun starting to hit the beers and do away games with my mates and not me father, but i was never OTT as there were too many people on the branch bus who knew me and looked out for me , I remember one bollocking off @Parkmaverick for fetching a bottle or two of some alcopop on the bus from the pub to the ground at liechfield, rightly so I may add

Glad I missed the time when racism was seemingly prevalent in football and in this country in general. Got no time for people happy to judge someone else off their skin colour or where they're from.

I've never heard out at the match thankfully.
