How racist were we ? (In the 70s)

Not football but it's hard to believe that as recently as the 90s they were naming TV gladiators Nightshade and Shadow.

Along the same lines there's a black bloke on the Chase they've nicknamed the dark destroyer. Not that I think it's racist but I would think with how liberal things are now, they'd have thought twice about that one.

The Derby game when Bennet and Gayle played at the shit tip was bad. But that was our friends up the road, we probably are sharing their reflected "glory" Forget it, that was the 80s.

I think back then it was more ignorance than anything else, I lived in Seaham, I was only ever aware of one black lad who lived there. I also was only aware of one f***ing mag!

Never heard that in all my life, and I was all over the different stands at Roker, not saying you are wrong, I have just never heard of that before
It was sung in the Clock stand paddocks near the Roker end. I'm not saying it was all the time but it must have been enough for me to recall it. It's a refreshing sign of the times that I wasn't even comfortable typing it out to be honest.

Neither can I, can't remember any real racism either, the terms Darkie or Blackie were used in the same way Jock or Paddy were used, If people see that as racist, then I suppose we were.
Every time a black footballer touched a football he was met with monkey chants. at every game, all game, every team . it was so common we didn't even notice.

It wasnt just the 80s I was in Wetherspoons after a Chelsea game at The Sol, got chatting with some Chelsea fans, I said I wasnt too impressed with Hasslebank on the day, the response from one of them "What do you expect, he is a f***ing Ni****!"
I'm guessing this is a total wind up.

What was the year Andy Cole scored against us for Man Utd in a cup game? Must have been mid 90's? Can remember listening to it on the radio and hearing racist singing towards him very loud, sounded like half the stand!

When I worked for British Coal at The Port of Tyne Authority my manager was a mag. He told me of 2 people in front of him at the matc

No, I wouldnt post it if it wasnt true

It was pretty bad, but not very much out of the ordinary for the time. One of the problems was that there were, at that time, very few black people living in the the North East, so it was a product of lack of experience of living and working with minorities, on top of the prevailing lack of awareness of racial issues.
This 100%.
I left for a job in London in the mid-sixties. Up until that point I had never worked with, spoken to or even met a black person; in fact I can't remember ever having seen one other than on the telly/in the cinema.

Spoons, hasslebank, sol, 80s.

It wasnt the 80s, f***ing hell man, it was around 2000 I think

see the bit in bold

When the teams ran out at RP, any opposition black players were greeted by a rousing chorus of a version of Que Sera featuring a deeply offensive racist term. Very unpleasant.

I can remember people chanting ' Roots! Roots' at black players. This was back in the 70s and was a reference to the popular TV series about black slaves. My brothers mate would happily join in and he was a black guy from Shields.

I remember Blackburn away must have been late 80s when one of their black players injured MacPhail and a few choruses of 'He's a wog a wog' to the tune of 'que sera sera' rang out.

That was pretty poor.

I remember standing near a fella in the Clockstand once who shouted in market trader style 'pound of bananas' every time Benno came near, 'half pound of Bananas' when Howard Gayle was nearby and 'Quarter pound of bananas' when it was Agboola.

I can't believe that like it was on constant repeat from my first game in 1984 to approximately our promotion from the third when it just seemed to stop.

Jan '96 and it wasn't racist; it was because of his former club.

I remember travelling to Bradford and Leicester in the 80s and our following singing 'Leicester's/Bradford's full of pakis'. Nobody thought they were doing anything wrong. Obviously, in hindsight...
