How racist were we ? (In the 70s)

amazing how many simple things have been deemed as racist after being accepted by our society for years--Blackboards (yet we changed from using the term from coloured to blacks?) getting golliwogs after saving tokens from jam.
Not saying all was perfect then at all but highlighting or changing stuff like that can make things worse! As said in my OP Benno happy enough here and still well thought of in his locals:cool:

We loved Benno man. He knew it too which is probably why he stayed.

This, definitely. Before I moved away in the late 70's, the only black fella I'd ever spoken to was an older bloke who was always smartly dressed, and wore a trilby. I think he lived in a flat above Jessie's florist's on Pallion Road, and always went along the terrace for his shopping every day. I think he came over in the 50's. Everyone was always polite to him, and most would say good morning etc. It was different on the terraces though, but, as you say, lack of experience etc.
Fear of the unknown, fear of invasion etc

Some things never change

A few black former players were discussing racism on 5live recently, and while they said the London clubs were the worst, we also got a mention as being bad

Were we particularly bad?

I started in the 80s and everyone still called Gary Bennett midnight

The Derby game when Bennet and Gayle played at the shit tip was bad. But that was our friends up the road, we probably are sharing their reflected "glory" Forget it, that was the 80s.

I think back then it was more ignorance than anything else, I lived in Seaham, I was only ever aware of one black lad who lived there. I also was only aware of one f***ing mag!

We were just as bad as anyone imo. The clocks in the early 80's where I stood was rife . Me and my mate would pray the opposition wouldn't have a black full back or it would be shocking.

Trigger trigger trigger
Shoot that ******
Which ******
That ******
Bang bang bang

This was sung regularly enough for me to remember it.
You'd be naive to say that the mags were far worse than us.

Never heard that in all my life, and I was all over the different stands at Roker, not saying you are wrong, I have just never heard of that before

Orient got loads of stick when they came to RP as they had 5/6 black players. It was racist alright. Shameful.

Cringe thinking about some of the stuff that went on... Was in the criterion in shields on the eve of one game. Group of West Ham fans start singing Bubbles...they were met with West Ham n** n**s sing this song doo dah doo dah

It wasnt just the 80s I was in Wetherspoons after a Chelsea game at The Sol, got chatting with some Chelsea fans, I said I wasnt too impressed with Hasslebank on the day, the response from one of them "What do you expect, he is a f***ing Ni****!"
