How Opioids took over the US

I get where Harry's coming from. Pure capitalism is iniquitous as well, but America takes it to a new level by using the law and government to fix the markets and protect monopolies and cartels. A free market might occasionally give someone else a shot or bring down a failing giant. American capitalism gives out subsidies and unheard of special rights to corporations
Big corporations can fix the market, make huge profits, and they "lawyer up" to protect themselves. I agree with his comment too, its rigged.

A computerised patient record system was programmed to automatically recommend opiod painkillers to patients after a secret deal between the suggested company and the drug companies

It's almost as if someone designed an experiment to see what would happen if you took isolated rural communities gave them access to loads of guns and drugs, and then fed them endless hostile and hysterionic media just to see what would happen?

Pharma-sponsored alerts of a similar nature happen on UK GP and pharmacists' computer systems so the idea that it's just a US thing is nonsense

Capitalism has brought much riches for many humans on this planet. We live in a time of extraordinary wealth.
It has but a nigh on unregulated capitalist for profit health care system churns out shit like this

And just to take the piss they've made Donald Trump the president

Natural Selection springs to mind. ... Trump is doing what Hitler did but with opiates and nobody bats an eyelid. Its the only reason they went into Afghanistan to control the opium production.

The company is only 15 years old. It has been prosecuted and will be paying $145m. It made $1m from the "deal".

The freakonomics podcast just did a two part thing on the opioid epidemic, very interesting and scary
Love that podcast.
The vaping one is great and makes you proud to be british!
So is the future of meet episode
Read this book when it came out which really explains the madness of it

Normal folk trusting their doctors and getting hooked on opiods as they had a sprained foot.

Scary

It has. Globally inequality has fallen, life expectancy and literacy is rising

But capitalism isn't one thing. You could have a system of international trade that helps bring wealth globally AND have a state healthcare safety net. The 2 things aren't imcompatible. Singapore for example?
And just to take the piss they've made Donald Trump the president

Have you read Deayton and Case's paper on life expectancy among white non-college graduate, no hispanic Americans?

There are large chunks of America with a sharply declining life expectancy, mostly due to poor diet, lack of exercise, guns and prescription drugs. Very close correlation between areas with a declining life expectancy and voting Trump

We are starting to see the same thing happening here - not with drugs but areas with a declining life expectancy due to lifestyle, and the same correlation with voting for Brexit

there's another heroin substitute in Russia and former soviet state called krokodil, which is made from codeine, petrol etc which is cheap and easy to make but one of the side effects is that it eats your skin away from the inside... (using used needles doesn't help either)

f***ing grim
