How old were you when you packed in playing football?

Doubt it, keeps it all low key.

He's 78 now and last summer a few of the lads in a team we run (u18s now) asked him how many keep ups he could do.
"As many as you want but I would get bored. Tell you what I will do a hundred"
Nailed it first attempt, the boys just applauded. Great moment
Hehe, great stuff. Gotta keep the yunguns right.

People often underestimate how good a player you need to be to play Northern League regularly!

the standard has gone massively backwards to only 10 year ago though - the top teams in Div 1 are still veryt good though but the 2nd division is poor these days.

I still the occasional 5a side, but I finished 11 a side when I was 25. Sadly some of the injuries I witnessed put me off

I hear horror stories in the gym all the time about football injuries, nearly all of them are 5-a-side injuries.

Me, mid 20's.

There are still £100 plus a game players in the 2nd Div, plenty of quality around

just cos they get paid doesn't mean they are top quality man ;) still some top players about mind who could definitely play at a higher level - just the oevrall standard isn't as good as it used to be

tbf the likes of Spennymoor, Consett, Whitley Bay etc have always paid top dollar and there's always other teams thrown money at players to try and get to the top.

11 a side - 25, too many kn*b heads wanting to fight and not enough wanting to play.
still play 5 a side when me mates can be arsed

Don't understand how people can give up playing at such a young age unless its for injuries or work, these are the same people I have no time for when they shout their daft opinions at the match, they give up football at a young age or have never played it at any decent level yet think they know everything about the game and more often than not are wrong, not always but mostly. Hopefully I last as long as you have although at 24 I've had my fair share of serious injuries, broken jaws and snapped ligaments among them. I'm currently playing at a good level and will look to drop down the leagues and carry on for as long as possible before moving onto over 35's or 40's. Fair play to you, nothing beats the feeling of winning a competitive game of football but good luck with your training

Totally agree mate, they obviously didn't love the game or they would have continued. Not too many serious injuries, three pots on right ankle, out for 10 months with knee ligaments in my late twenties. Thought that was it then, couldn't kick the bairns fluffy ball with a bell in it. Knee gradually just got better, was a nightmare time. If you play to a good standard now you have the choice to drop down the leaguyes, move back in position etc. I loved the crack at the football, used to play over 40's on Sat and 11 a side on Sunday, was a bit much so I packed in the over40's and continued Sunday league till 50. Knees started aching last 10 mins then last 20 mins then second half then all bloody game, time to pack in.
Good luck but my experience of the over 40's was it was a harder game than playing against 20 year olds.

19 professionally. 34 competitively. 36 Sunday fuck about. Gonna have a blast at over 40s next season. Never really done the 5s thing.

39 and a half & 3stone over fighting weight and after 8 knee operations and 6 broken bones.

Some of the second division teams might surprise you with their quality, seahad red star had an excellent squad last season and were unlucky not to get promoted to division 1. Jarrow roofing went up last season and have quite a few players released from premier league academy's. One of them is a striker who actually played in a premier league game for us (against west brom I think but not sure on this) anyways my point is around half the teams in the second division are of a good standard, the bottom half, however, I agree aren't great shakes. I'd recommend anyone to take in a northern league game, especially midweek when we aren't playing. Some cracking games for only a fiver

I agree that for about a fiver you get some entertainment at Northern League games. When I'm home I take in a few.

Red Stat had a budget of £1200 a week according to those in the know. Which is staggering really. Although dwarfed by the first division big payers like Celtic Nation and Spennymoor.

Then you've got like of Birtley, Brandon and Darlo RA that play for nowt. Strange old league. But the quality has dropped from years ago. But still honest.

Apparently Celtic nations owner has pulled out and their having some sort of clear out? Heard they were paying players to come down from playing professionally in Scotland last season for a higher wage. Not sure how much of it all is true but iv played at Celtic nation a few times and their crowds are always small so they will struggle without his backing if true. It will be good to see ryhope back next year they were relegated for not meeting ground requirements. Looks likely to happen to Whitehaven again this year

Still play 5 as side at 41. Never fit/good enough for 11 a side.

The key is to play against players in the same age range/fitness level otherwise you would sharp get sick of it.
