Need to shift someone first and weve just signed Scowen permanently
Who ?
Would love us to get rid of Wyke Grigg Leadbitter and either Power or Dobson ( I assume we’ll not see Scowen !) Another decent striker and at least two mobile and attacking midfielders

Doesn’t matter who we recruit tbh. Whilst we have such a losing mentality at the club, a terrible manager, players without any fight in them who hate the physical game and no academy system to fill the gaps we are going to struggle in this league.

I’d like to see us sign no one over the age of 23. And never pay a transfer fee again.

We as a club with our fan base and facilities be a draw of youngsters with potential dropping out of PL/Champ Academies. Add in National League ambitious young uns and the odd Scot and League of Ireland talent and that should be more than enough to develop in the 23s and feed into the 1st squad as and when needed - and of they smash it their are starters.

People talk about about creating pathways for youngsters and want two 1st team squad members in every position - fuck that. We can’t afford it. Squad of 18/19 and supplement with the youngsters. That’s the carrot we need to help try and keep our talent and attract the better kids in the region that our Cat 1 should be bringing in.

Nurture talent past the U16s, expose them to first team football and sell at a good price IF it comes along.

Moneyball for DoF.

Never pay a transfer fee again ! Fuck me - National League here we come. FTM

Why? There are 126 U23s without a club released this year from full professional contracts, you telling me that none of them are talented enough to play and/or be development for League One?

Oh and we’ve spent money so well over the last 10 years haven’t we!

Give me the last three players we’ve bought then sold and made money?

There has to be a middle ground though, it's no good committing to never buying another player, you could miss out on massive profits looking at it cynically. Just put in place some principles to stick by, like age, fee limits etc. I'd happily see us never buy an older player from a big club again.

That includes players fot U23's I would imagine.
I don’t think it does or if it does, I think once Flanagan signed it was probably seven. We will almost certainly sign two centre halves and a keeper. If O’Brien is a third striker we’ll probably bring in another winger/ wide player. That’s six without addressing left back or midfield. A couple could be u23’s with a chance of first team opportunities but most will be with a view to improving first team.
I reckon we’ll sign up to a dozen u23’s to make up numbers of the decimated academy squad.

Of course. My original post did say I’d like to see us never paying a fee, a little tongue in cheek perhaps.

To get to that stage we’d have a fruitful academy, a well worn pathway to the first team. When we ever get there then spending money on game changers instead of solid professionals would be the order of the day.

I realise this is all very idealistic and a little pie on the sky. But it’s a direction that I’d like to see us take. No f***ing this model or that model just good sound recruitment and development.

We’ve bought and subsequently sold for a profit a grand total of 3 players since 2009 as far as I can see. That’s over 80 buys, and THREE sold for a profit.

Sick of wasting money when there’s not any semblance of a cohesive strategy for recruitment or development.

Desperation and blind hope aren’t good strategies.
