How have we got this so wrong?

We saw what was happening around the world, then in Italy and Europe, and seemed to have done nothing about it.

The piece in Reuters last night was very worrying

More people died yesterday than in any day in Italy, thats outrageous.

I just can't believe how slow to respond out Government has been, only now are they even talking about mass testing

At no point was there banning of flights from hot spots

We just seem to have allowed it to slowly happen and we'll probably end up the worst hit besides USA.

Well for some reason we decided herd immunity was the best approach. Isolate the vunerable and let the rest of us slog it out.

Then we realised that wasn't the best idea as it'd seem likely that approach could kill a couple hundred thousand people so changed to a lock down mentality. We'll be hit harder than if we went for a lock down style approach sooner, but not as bad as we would be had we kept up with herd immunity.

Its incompetence of the highest order, how we could look at what was happening in Italy and just let things drift.

the only advice for 3 weeks was wash your hands, that was literally it.

Lulled into a false sense of security due to other recent pandemics petering out I think. Not that I blame the government, to be honest I'm still surprised they acted as strongly and quickly as they did. You can always look back and say this or that should have been done.

Look at countries like Brazil, where their president is urging local governments to lift lockdowns as it is "just the sniffles" , for some context on what a bad response looks like.

"If I have to go to work I'm going for a pint after"

What the fuck are you talking about?

are you pissed?

The Government didn't act strongly or quickly thats the whole point.

I think they may only really have been looking at the deaths in Italy. Since it was the elderly and underlying health risks causing the numbers in the main, some logic process went "well just keep them isolated and it'll be fine!". Maybe the penny dropped that even people who may not die from it would still need to be hospitalised, taking up beds and increasing the risk of passing it on to the elderly and those with underlying conditions who were in hospital anyway.

I think it was reasonably quick when you are talking about a tory government effectively shutting down the national economy for an indefinite period and implementing socialist policies to ensure the vast majority of the population have the majority of their income covered.

Ah so the coronavirus spread in the UK, Italy, Spain, France and China at such a rate because the public were behaving like children

I see.

Glad you find the situation so blaze and funny, sick.

There's a number of social differences. The Swedes generally live in households of small numbers, whereas Italy its large multi generational. Sweden is also sparsely populated. But behaving like adults is why their government have felt they don't need to go full Lockdown.
