How has your life been affected by the decline and fall of SAFC?

I think when you reach a certain age you become more tolerant. It doesn’t affect me in any negative way. I’ve decided to go to all the games and in recent years get more enjoyment seeing the regulars at away games. It’s almost like group therapy:lol:

I do surprise myself how tolerant I’ve become over the years as I wasn’t always so placid. I think once we reach a certain level of shitness you either jump ship or stick with them in the hope of the odd good day. I reckon it might be at Cardiff next week;)

Positives:
- being able to get a coffee at half time before the second half kicks off
- not having to stay up till around midnight to watch us play last on MOTD

Negatives:
- having to watch players who are either past it, will never have it, or who couldn't give a shit
- having the feeling that it's going to be a long way back if we ever get back

I am 58 yrs old. I saw my first match 50 years ago. Have been an exile for 30 years. Coming back to UK this year. Footballing wise, the worst time to come back I know. We have won one real trophy in that 50 years. But loads and loads of great memories, and the club has enriched my life to a monumental degree. No need to dwell on the individual moments, you all know what they are. Not trophy-laden then, but there was always hope - whether in old Div1/Premier, or the lower tiers - that it would not take that much to make us successful. But it appears that without a huge injection of cash, that seems far away now. It could take many years to get back to a position where we can challenge again, if it happens at all.

I check these pages every day, a lot of gallows humour, and a lot of anger. Rightly so. I am not pointing the finger in this post, too many others for that. I just wanted to explore the great sadness that so many people will feel at the moment. Those that have followed the club for decades, those a lot younger. It is the lowest ebb. Far worse than Lawrie Mac days.

For someone like me, who is getting on now, it is bitter-sweet. We have experienced the highs and the lows. We have also experienced what life has to throw at us, and know that time runs fast. Football as the years go by becomes less important. It's just the way it is. Other things to worry about. And for sanity's sake, it would be suicidal to keep worrying about the club, when you have yourself, family and friends to think/worry about. But there is no denying the sickness in the stomach when the mind currently turns to SAFC. One of the most important things in my life is going down the drain, and there seems no way out of it.

Sorry for the depressive nature of this post, I am normally a positive guy when it comes to SAFC. Coleman gives us some hope, but he is not a miracle worker. I just hope someone buys out Short sooner rather than later. With the cash to save us.

Good luck at Boro lads. Fans and team.
58 is not getting on you are still a young sprog.
The only way it affects me is
my joints hurt when I travel to away games but this won't stop me travelling even if we do go down. Sod the doom and gloom.

It's a shame that they Laurel and Hardy style cocked up a potential mid-table premier league team, but if we are honest baring Sam and Bruce's early run they never really settled. People's priorities in life are different in the way the support the team, in my eyes it is not the end of the world because it is a sport and others on here are much more passionate about it. Don't get me wrong whinged plenty of times about certain things on here like the previous manager though

I love the area and really miss coming up but I don't want to watch the lads play at home. It is a long way to come to watch players who are apathetic and couldn't give a toss about the Club. My last home game was Watford last December and I have only been to Brentford and Burton away this season.

I used to enjoy going into London with other supporters and watching thd games on Sky. I am paying for the radio commentary, for which I feel that I am being ripped off.

I have seen the U23s play Arsenal and Spurs and am going to watch the U18s tomorrow at Watford. I have enjoyed watching the U23s more that the first team last season. STID

Too long, did not read.

Seriously though, it’s not just SAFC I feel apathy towards, it’s the state of the game in general. I started going when we were in the old third division and have seen plenty of shit times since then. However, the game is unrecognisable now. It has been ruined by money to the point where we are so far away from having a level playing field that it’s pointless. Granted, you might get the odd Leicester winning the league and Wigan winning the cup but it’s mostly about survival and turnover with the odd win against the big boys or a local rival.

I let my season ticket lapse three years ago because I didn’t enjoy it anymore. It felt sad but it’s one of the best things I ever did. I spend my time much more productively and am happier for it. Still go to the odd game, get on here and watch on the telly (or listen on the radio). Although I’m upset and angry at the current state of the club, getting some perspective has been great. There are much more important things in life to focus on than football/SAFC. If you spend a lot of time on it and base your level of happiness around it then you’re signing up for a rough ride.

It's a bit of a ball ache at the moment but things, as they say, will only get better (he hopes!) The mantra should be don't let things you have little or no control over get you down, it isn't worth it, all part of life's great tapestry and I couldn't support anyone else anyway.......
Great post. Spot on.

Great post. Spot on.
As is yours marra. In fact, they all are on this thread & even though many hold contrary views I find myself relating to most of them (as a previous poster, @Idle Mackem said)

Ive lost interest in football cos of us. I cant watch it at all.
we are the only team i have any interest in. i couldn't care less about any other team apart from whoever the mags are playing. the game is shite nowadays.
i get more enjoyment watching the rugby. i get more into that than any of the games on tv. been to see the falcons and mowden at darlington. some games are quite exciting really and you don't feel as though you're a 'customer'
