How England are producing their own Starc

I seem to remember much of the same after the last Ashes failure - yet lessons weren't learn in the selection before this one.

Rinse and repeat unfortunately.

Plus wasn't Shine chased when he was originally England bowling coach about ten years ago?

Very interesting list of "fast bowlers" most of whom are not regulars for their counties who prefer to play steady meduim pacers with better economy rates or even worse overseas players not qualified for England.

As many have said on here, how are these prospects going to hone their skills in competitive matches when we play so few CC matches in June and July?

What did you think of the article?

What do you want me to say?

It wasn't exactly cutting edge was it? We all know our bowlers in Australia weren't quick enough but we also know it's because the selectors picked the wrong f***ing players. We have lads who can bowl 90+mph but they were left at home - that's not Kevin Shine's fault.

Regarding Shine though, we shall see if his methods work in the coming years - but I'm very wary of England coaches messing with bowlers technique and rythym, historically that has done more harm than good.

Agree. It was interesting but it read a bit like Kevin Shine with the ECB wanting to get some positive spin after all the negative and stories about how promising bowlers have gone to Loughborough and gone backwards, e.g. Finn. Although having said that Finn's problems happened while ago and maybe the set-up has changed but the article didn't may that clear and in fact refer to anything negative as I recall it.

I don’t want you to say anything.

I just thought that in an age where a lot (albeit there a few exceptions) of sports journalism can be banal (did you know Cook likes farming?) this was a decent article. And I wondered if you agreed

Yeah, you make a good point Bri - wouldn't be the first time that 'journalist' has talked up FTECB or the establishment.

I'd say right now, the public would be more interested to hear from the selectors. They are the ones questions should be being put to. Its a disgrace how easy of a ride they're getting.

Well that's up to you, but the way I see it (and Bri sees it) it was the epitome of banal. I've said already, we have 90+mph bowlers, but what difference does it make if the same old military medium trundlers get picked ahead of them?

As alluded to, I think the real questions should be being asked of the selectors - she doesn't do hard questions though. She's part of the problem, shes the establishment and she's happy to be, because that's how she's got to where she has.

By that logic, every cricketing pundit is part of the problem? Right?

If you want something that isn't banal - read George Dobell, he isn't scared to rattle a few cages. Even Tim Wellock asks the questions people want asked. I feel quite sorry for you that you think that article isn't banal, I'm genuinely not trying to offend by saying that.

WRONG. See above.

There's plenty of others though, the lads who went after the ICC for example - they asked the hard questions and kept probing even when the authorities tried to close them down. That fucker you're on about is the establishment, yes sir, no sir, three bags full sir.

One or two then. You feel sorry for me? I feel sorry for you that you are so blinkered by a gender. I don’t think it’s a work of art, but it was quite interesting. It may not have answered the questions you have, but it was about something different to that

For answers as to why we're failing, read this - not that happy clapping article from The Times .

Wondered how long it would be until you brought gender into it. It's nowt to do with gender, it's everything to do with being shite. Let's face it, you or I could have written the same article, all that article is, is a mouthpiece for Kevin Shine and FTECB. That's all we ever get, from more than just her, journalists who toe the party line.

I prefer to read articles where journalists actually get to the root of the problem and ask what people (the public) want to hear. As I say, George Dobell is about the best one right now, there are others too, Jarrod Kimber and Sam Collins for example. Even the lad currently writing for the Chronicle - Stuart Rayner.

Look, if you want to read stuff like that and enjoy them, that's entirely your want. If you think that is in any way cutting edge, or different to the norm, that's your choice. All I'm saying, is that most people are absolutely sick and f***ing tired of the establishment line. We've had it for years and years and where's it got us? Back to back 4-0 defeats on winter tours. Absolutely and utterly embarrassed both times and in the main, because the selectors are a joke. Their positions are completely untenable. Even now, their choices for NZ are nothing short of a disgrace. Will anything change? I really doubt it. They'll still be picking the squad for Pakistan in May.

If you want a real insight into Loughborough and Kevin Shine, see what Dobell has to say about it in the link I supplied.

Hopefully then you'll see Lizzy's article is f***ing nonsense.

Mind I have to say just because somebody gets recorded bowling 88/90 mph in the nets for a few deliveries does not mean they are a genuine fast bowler. The big test is to be able to bowl at that pace for 3 or 4 sessions in a days play.
I remember Ian Hunter in one of those early televised day/night matches bowling a few deliveries up to 90mph because he just wanted to know how fast he could bowl.

Don't get me wrong I quite like Lizzie and have enjoyed many of her articles but you can see how this went down. ie ECB: "Lizzie, if you want to do an article on fast bowler we can get you access to Kevin Shine and you can see for yourself what is happening."

Which is fair enough but Lizzie had the chance but seems not to have addressed the criticisms.
Why do bowlers apparently go into Loughborough bowling fast and come out slower?
What are you doing to prevent injuries and how successful are you at that? - with all the data they're supposedly collecting they must have some on injury prevention.

Anyway, interesting but a lost opportunity imho

I'd go further with that and say it probably was a condition of her access that she could only ask what they told her to ask.

ISIS and North Korea have fuckall on FTECB when it comes to silencing journalists.

Maybe so. I wasn’t picking up on that, I was picking up on the point that she should be having a go at the selectors, which isn’t what this article is about.
