House alarms & the police.

A house alarm just started going off in our street 5-10 minutes ago.

After a couple of minutes of it blaring away, I thought I'd do the good neighboury thing and call the police non-emergency line to report it.

Police switchboard person asked me if I'd seen anyone breaking in, running away, broken glass or anything - which I hadn't, because I hadn't moved from my PC chair.

She goes on to tell me that they won't bother sending anyone to check it out if there's been no witnessing of an actual crime in progress, that even if there was a crime in progress the police couldn't turn the alarm off, and that most house alarms switch themselves off after about 20 minutes.

Apparently if it keeps going off continuously for a few days the environmental health people can get involved.

Useful!

gadgee came to fit a new bell unit for our alarm at the weekend and our lass (no) was still in bed with a hangover.
He starts fitting the new unit and the alarm starts to go off nowt unusual there I'm thinking obviously does that if circuits broken or whatever.
10 minutes later the bloody things still going off so I wander to the open front door and there he is on his ladders wearing ear defenders so I think yeah no probs obviously will carry on ringing till he's finished and another 10 minutes goes by when he pops his head round the door and asks
"do you mind if I turn that off it's getting on my friggin nerves":lol:

Fuckin livid if a member of my familys getting mugged but the police can't help cause they're too busy turning off some stupid alarm..

WTF?

This happens all the time, phoning the police after 10 minutes

Plus, if you were so annoyed at the Police not checking it out, why didn't you get off your fat arse and have a quick butchers out the window and make sure there was nobody leaving the house with the tv?

Right, so there's only me that thinks "what's the point having a burglar alarm if the police don't check it out when it goes off?" then?

Out of all of them I'd say 'House' is the best.
The Alarm had missed the boat by years and The Police have dated.

Are you on a permanent wind up these days?

Why didn't you get off your arse and have a look yourself?

If the police went to investigate every alarm after 10 mins.....

What the fuck?

I swear, everyone else is on a permanent wind-up these days.

Seeing as though you're obviously so familiar with the topic, why don't you explain what the point of an alarm is, if the police don't bother checking it out?

Sorry, jumped in with both feet again.
The only thing I can suggest is ear plugs Fyl.

:-D It's fine mate.

Yours was, bizarrely, one of the least offensive posts on the thread.

If someone breaks into our house, it silently alerts the police, and then a few minutes later will start sounding the alarm.

It's meant to give the police time to turn up, but I recon they should have set the delay for about 3 days.

I would say an alarm goes off in my street a couple of times a week (there's business premises across the road, nice cross section). Let's estimate 100 properties in the street altogether and take that average across the country. Let's estimate again, say 25 million or so properties...... so about half a million alarms going off a week.

Half a million call outs a week, seems reasonable.
