Hornets? Bees? What are the insects buzzing about our tree?

Unlikely, but certainly not impossible, to be honeybee swarm this time of year. They are more common earlier in the year.

Probably hoverflies. One species looks a lot like honeybees.

Hornets are massive. They sound like fecking helicopters. They are yellow with a lighter shade of brown rather than black like wasps. They are pretty placid away from their nest but can be very dangerous if you approach the nest.
