Homelessness and rough sleeping

There’s a very wide spectrum of what the state considers homeless, from people who are about to lose a tenancy and those in temporary accommodation, to those either ‘sofa surfing’, in a refuge or shelter, or those actually sleeping rough.

Do not be fooled by the official number of rough sleepers. It’s almost certainly an underestimate.

The number of “homeless” people for official purposes is those who present to their council claiming they’re about to become homeless or their housing situation isn’t suitable and the council agrees and says yes, you’re homeless.
