Homeless people

When I worked at the Centre for Life there was always a few of them hanging around central station. I took them sandwiches that had not been sold in the on site cafe, when I tried to hand them over I was met with "we don't want your f***ing sandwiches".

Pretty much gave up after that.

Irrespective of their personal circumstances I always try and give them something. I would hate to be in the position where living on the streets is considered better than a roof over my head. I’m probably exacerbating the whole homeless thing, but I know I’d be grateful for any sort of genuine help.

The thing is, if I was in their situation, I'd be trying to get food or blag shelter or anything.
I wouldn't just sit on the floor and hope for a few pence.

What I can't abide - and this may cause a further debate - is homeless people who have dogs. I imagine they take care of them, but why should a dog or any animal be put in that position when they don't have a choice?
Granted I suspect some homeless people treat their animals better than some people who have houses do, but it seems harsh to me.

96% of beggars in Newcastle are fake.

Not sure about percentages, but i reckon you're right. A couple got on the Metro at the same place as me. The scruffiest one had no ticket. Neither did their dog.
Walked down Northumberland St. just in front of us. I doubt they are homeless. Last night, same place, young lass, reasonably dressed, sitting in her begging spot, chatting to 3 of her pals. Impression i got was, she was just trying her hand to see how much she could raise. Didn't look like normal scruffy beggars to me.
Mrs R gives them something once in a blue mood. They get nothing from me.

I was listening to a "homeless" lass in Brighton on R4 a few month back. Sits on North Street every day with her cap in hand and reckons she averages about £50 a day in donations. Said she wasn't really homeless and went back to her gaff where she had her rent paid and got her dole money. Reckoned all in she was getting about £600 a week worth off rent/benefits/cadging.

I just give to Shelter each month like to help ease any guilt when I niver give the homeless owt in the street. I did give a bloke in a shop doorway a cold bottle of watter from £3 meal deal a few weeks ago when it was scorching. Fucked if he was getting me sarnie like.

The Tories have been on about taxing donations to homeless people for a while.

All homeless people will be asked to self assess.

You could quite easily end up homeless.
Yes, if I lost my job I’d immediately be without a home. But I have friends and family I could no doubt doss with, even if it was in their shed or summat. I also have specialised skills and work at a pretty high level, so if pushed I could move onto any number of sectors and hopefully get solvent quickly. What I wouldn’t be is a bum in a cardboard box.

I was in leeds a few months back for a gig.

Sat in weatherspoons the next morning having breakfast and saw a beggar sitting next to a cash point with his hand out.

A young lass stopped to get money, there was some sort of exchange between them, she went into a shop and came out with a bottle of coke for him.

He took the lid off, poured the drink on the ground and threw the bottle at her.

I would have found it hard not to boot him in the head of that had been me.

The arrogance is strong in this one.

You could start an argument in an empty room man. Give me a scenario where I would end up homeless then.

I’m not doing anything other than trying to open your eyes to the plight of homeless people and try and instil some sorely lacking compassion into you.

You could end up homeless. You could develop mental health problems, lose your job and struggle to find another, end up in trouble with the law, etc.

People’s lives can spiral out of control from one event. Don’t be so arrogant to assume you’re immune from this. Nobody is immune from anything, certainly not most people on here, yourself included.

Have some compassion.

Well you see herein lies the problem. I don’t have any compassion for them. Or sympathy, or empathy. Beyond myself, my friends and my family, I couldn’t give a shiny shite about anyone else in the world. I’ve talked about it plenty of times on here before. It’s not like I’m deliberately trying to provoke a reaction, I just don’t seem to have a compassion gene. Victims of war, famine, natural disaster, disease, the holocaust - none of them mean anything to me so I don’t give them a seconds thought. So having worked all my life, I did it very difficult to have any compassion for someone who spends their days begging.
